Geomancy Mandala: almost done

It’s perhaps ironic. No sooner do I put this project away for the day (or rather a few days) but I think of three more things I want to do to it. Of course. Proof once again that no piece of art is ever finished, but merely abandoned. This is the mandala of Geomancy, astrology and alchemy that I’ve been working on since mid-April or so. It’s a conflation of the sixteen signs of geomancy, the four elements, the fifteen fixed Behenian stars of medieval star lore, fifteen signs or emblems of alchemy, the Tree of Life, and a few other wrinkles. On the whole, I think it’s been a very successful project.

The whole project is visible above, and a couple of details are below.

  1. when making the second post/version can you also write down the table of correspondences? (and if possible how you came to them?) ty for this informative post/art piece already

  2. Not sure if this is still active, but I stumbled here looking for connections between the geomantic figures and the fixed stars. Your mandala is inspiring — really a great work of art. How did you choose to associate the geomantic figures with the particular fixed stars, or is that just a matter of working out the mandala? Thanks for sharing your work, it made my day.

    • This blog is still active. Fortunately.

I used the associations of the geomantic figures with planets and Zodiacal signs first off, and then positioned the fixed stars in the spaces closest to their position in the theoretical Zodiac that got constructed around the rim. It’s not ideal, by any means — but as a teaching diagram it works quite well.

    • Thank you. It’s been fun to work on and develop. There are definitely some challenges or errors that will need to be fixed in v 2.0… But there’s an intellective work that happened alongside the hand-eye coordination, and I’ll write about that some other time after this coming week is over.

    • Speaking of which, could you put 1.0 (and any 2.0) in a link somewhere?
Hell, why not put it up in your Etsy shop?
