Poem: Sun Conjunct Jupiter

As part of my ongoing series of poems for the planets’ annual meetings with one another, here’s a hymn for the 18 May 2024 conjunction of the Sun and Jupiter. This conjunction sort-of coincides with the same-day conjunction of Venus and Uranus. Don’t sleep on the Conjunction of the Benefics, either, which occurs a few days later on 23 May 2024!

Glory and joy to all, great living Sun
and Jupiter benevolent, you send!
Light and life, while unending ages run,
you send to the world —and its course you bend
toward justice, and peace, and deep harmony
where tooth and claw run red with crimson bright,
but neighbors also sing and dance with joy
and where each being carries melody
in its own season, whether day or night —
and sacrifice and mercy, all employ.

All that can live or die in Earth's broad lap,
the womb of Mother, her cradle and creche,
is caught in the net of gravity's trap,
whether evolved from cellulose or flesh.
The golden tendrils of Apollo's flame
nurtured the gardens in which we all dwell —
but it was the blue-white lightning of Jove
that stirred tidal pools and called Life by name,
merging souls from stars with matter from Hell...
and dreamed of the stag in the oaken grove.

Hail to you both, great Jupiter and Sun!
Today you meet in sequestered splendor,
and send praise when you unite as One
and seek to rule — as gentle, as tender,
as a father lifting his baby boy
onto his shoulders to watch a parade
over the heads of the jubilant mass!
Such force, ill-applied, could break, might destroy...
yet here we stand, in wonder, unafraid,
cheered and amazed at the sight as you pass!
