Poem: Venus conjunct Uranus

Each year, Venus conjuncts Uranus. This year, it occurs on 18 May 2024, on the same day as the Sun conjuncts Jupiter; and just a few days before the annual Conjunction of the Benefics, which occurs on 23 May 2024. It’s unusual to have these combinations all in the same week. Usually they’re a bit more spread out.

Hail, Queen of heaven, at the scoundrel's show,
as the mountebank displays his patent,
in fluttering light where fireflies glow,
and foot lamps illuminate his pageant!
Hail, Uranus, electric inventor,
presenting to Beauty's crowned head of state,
your genius hid in twittering patter!
What magic did you offer to lend her,
And what new trick will she see you create?
What brings her ride here in a brisk canter?

Excitement builds as the performance starts,
each one acting for the other, alone:
There may be missteps; a few fits and farts,
but under each mask, a smile is known:
Who's the patron here — and who's the client?
Is this snake oil? Or Panacea?
Who lies here? the products — or personas?
On her fortunes he might be reliant,
but she might really need his idea:
longing sweetens this air with aromas

like blooming lilac wafts soft redolence
all through the garden in the pregnant spring:
a bouquet enjoyed but in indolence,
since no means exists to make the smell cling
to soap, to cologne, to eau de toilette...
or any thing a mortal artist makes,
or that alchemist sends to the lightning.
Yet wonders can be made, that none forget,
so ravishing that Beauty herself shakes,
in love with Innovations frightening.

Venus and Uranus’s conjunction poem seemed like such a chore to write, and yet it came together quite suddenly this afternoon. Enjoy!
