A recent article in the New York Times travel section on Sunday reported that this market, the Mercado Vuccheria, in the heart of Palermo, Sicily, is starting to die. The buildings are all beaten up, the restaurant at the upper left of the photo (the Shanghai Trattoria) is thinking about closing, and all the vegetable and fish vendors are starting to have financial difficulties. It’s awkward.
I loved our visit to this market. It’s an impressive and beautiful place, and the vegetable stands put the Korean produce shops in New York City to shame.
