Hymn for a Sun Uranus Conjunction

It’s taken me years to understand that the Sun-Uranus conjunction every year usually corresponds to an unexpected and usually unpleasant surprise in my life. In 2018, it was a hit-and-run driver rear-ending me. In 2019, police responded when I entered what I thought was an AirB&B — but it turned out to be an alarmed office building with the same door code. In 2020 it was the cancellation of months of planning and organization of a live, in-person event, replaced by online COVID-related programming. The spring of 2021 brought on the resignation of a key person in a volunteer leadership team, and a scramble to find a replacement. My wife and I scrambled to clear out her mother’s old house in Maine in 2022, driving from our home in Massachusetts to a tiny coastal town eight hours away for a frantic three days of packing and junk-chucking. My dad underwent hip surgery in 2023 and I spent an unexpected four weeks in my parents’ company as their caretaker. The 2024 Sun-Uranus conjunction pulled me into too many roles in an event I’d hope to avoid completely.

Twice now, 2025 and 2026 have occurred just at or before a Memorial Day weekend event where I had to cancel my participation in order to handle an important health crisis for a family members.

I must admit that these disruptions did not occur on the day of the conjunction, or even in some cases the week before or the week after. But the Sun moves about 1° of arc a day, and Uranus moves so slowly, that the two planets are often “in orb” or in the same close part of the sky, no more than a couple of finger-widths, for a couple of weeks at a time. Uranus, being so far away and so dim, is invisible in this conjunction as he is nearly all the time; the Sun, meanwhile, shines brilliant light and rationality upon an unexpected and confusing situation from a place of duty and responsibility.

In any case, I’m tired of getting caught out by the Sun and Uranus every year, and maybe I’m being told (not so subtly) to write a hymn in honor of their annual meeting.

Hymn for the Sun-Uranus Conjunction

Hail to you, Sun, shining with brilliant light,
discerning proper action when surprised;
And you also, Uranus, who with might
conveys by every stratagem devised,
interruption, disturbance, change of plans:
Your every meeting sets on new courses,
the general flanked, the captain surrendered.
Disguised, the rockstar slips past desperate fans;
protestors suborn the regime's forces;
CEOs take resignations tendered.

Some motivations are ever shadowed,
so actions they prompt are unexpected.
In our response, one duty is hallowed,
a salient honored and protected.
Other paths, compared, become trivial.
Only one bridgehead matters to the brass,
and noe shall impeach your narrowed choices.
You'll miss the leisure, and convivial
circles, and friendly banter. But you'll pass
the fretful test of questioning voices.

Come, valiant Sun, and gleam on fresh new streets!
Show me the swerve that Uranus chooses.
May I prove to be whom the moment meets:
a worthy opponent who refuses
witless dalliance or soft diversions —
where the need appears, I set my mind
to win free of the ambush closed around.
The tale may be told in other versions,
but mine be recognized as right and kind —
the alarm was raised! I answered that sound!

I tend to think of Uranus as one of the upstarts and the Sun as one of the Aristocrats, and the idea of Aristocrats and Upstarts, or Rulers and Interlopers tends to inform my thinking around the outer planets and their relationships to the visible planets…

Upcoming Sun-Uranus Conjunctions

It’s 367 Days until the 2027 Sun-Uranus conjunction as I copy out this poem for you to read. For East Coast Americans, it occurs in the fourth house, related to home and family; and in Gemini, indicating intellectual debate and consideration of many different possibilities. Securing important papers and documents against damage may be an issue.
