The Sun enters Sagittarius III, The Horse’s Skull, (as named by Austin Coppock in 36 Faces), on 11 December 2025 at 2:14 pm EST over my home in Western Massachusetts. The Sun will be besieged between Venus and Mars, with roughly 7° in both directions — the distance at which the Sun’s rays are said to make the other two planets combust. This makes all three planets considerably less effective in the next nine days, nineteen hours, and forty-nine minutes until December 21, 2025 at 10:03 am EST when Capricorn I begins — placing delays on matters relating to the twelfth, first, fourth, sixth, and seventh houses, as shown further on.
Additionally, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, and Mercury are each inconjunct to one sign they rule; and the Moon is square her own sign and in the realm of the South Node, warning us that fun often brings troubling consequences. For so much of the next ten days, we’re getting little celestial help at all. . T. Susan Chang may have had an inkling of this when she called this decan The Weight of the World.

By planetary configuration, Sagittarius III belongs to Saturn’s administration, and the old man is finally direct, separating from a square to Mars back on December 8 (6:53 pm EST), dignified by term in the eighth house. Saturn is gearing up for an astonishing conjunction with Neptune at 0° Aries on 20 February 2025. I’ll have more to say about that in due course, but the 36-year cycle of Saturn-Neptune conjunctions is usually associated with the failure of propaganda and the collapse of dynasties; the last time they conjuncted at 0° Aries was in 1742 BCE, during an era when the Hyksos (Who on earth were the Hyksos?) successfully invaded and temporarily ruled the delta region of pharaonic Egypt.
The Greeks of late antiquity looked to Anangke at this time of year, “the goddess whom the gods worship.” Her name means “Necessity”, and her emblem may have been a snake wrapped around an egg. Her drop spindle for making thread was said to be the method by which the two cosmic motions, The Motion of the Same, and the Motion of the Different, were set in motion. Like the three Moirai (Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos) with which many of us are more familiar, Necessity was a deity of fate — but a far more implacable and deliberate one. The Moirai govern whether you get in a hit-and-run accident, but Anangke might be said to govern the death of stars.
It’s not easy to imagine how the various cities on the Mediterranean might have honored Anangke, and indeed — many of them didn’t. The smattering of evidence we have suggests a rather more ‘down to earth’ time of worship for the Moon goddess Artemis or Diana. The ancient Spartans held their coming-of-age rites at the last full moon before the Winter Solstice, for example, gradually transforming from a playful cheese-stealing ritual to a bloody and violent spectacle that Roman tourists found grisly. While the specific form of that ceremony didn’t transplant well to other locations (fortunately!), the custom of marking that full moon was popular.
It’s also the season (or days) of Ophiuchus. There’s a periodic kerfuffle in astrology when NASA or some similar science and technical organization insists that there are thirteen signs rather than twelve in the Zodiac. There’s a broad range of technical reasons why astrologers don’t use the constellation Ophiuchus as the name of one of the twelve signs of the Zodiac — but it is true that the path of the Sun passes through Ophiuchus for about three days, approximately the nineteenth through twenty-first of December in our own era. During this time, the Sun will conjunct the star Rasalhague, “the physician star” in the heel of Ophiuchus — the snake-handler constellation associated with the healer-god Asclepius. If you have placements in your chart around here, you might consider a career in medical fields: you’ll be needed.
The tarot card associated with this decan is the Ten of Wands, which Pamela Colman Smith painted as a man under a dark sky, bearing a heavy load of bundled sticks. An orderly bundle of rods (especially one wrapped around an axe) has been a symbol of authority for twenty-five centuries — but more recently has come to mean improperly or misused power. Smith’s relatively disorganized bundle is more often understood as weighty burdens and suffering under a to-do list of self-imposed chores, though — a kind of self-imposed personal fascism where we do not permit ourselves to rest but drive ourselves ever onward.
The dodeks or twelfth parts of Sagittarius III are Leo, Virgo, Libra, and Scorpio. In the past I’ve pointed out that these resemble the elder’s fourfold desire: first to be a skilled speaker and leader; second to be capable of using their knowledge and information to analyze and solve problems; third to be able to be wealthy and skilled at navigating economic issues; and finally to be thought virile and desirable. Yet it also reflects the youth’s drive to find a place in the world: first to come across as amicable and strong when getting a job; then to be skillful enough to promote; worthy enough to reward with prosperity; and knowledgeable enough to keep close and retain.
I’ve written previously about Sagittarius III in 2024 • 2023 • 2022 • 2021 • 2020 • 2019.
Dates to Watch
Uranus will be in sextile relationship with Neptune for nearly the entire ten days, only dropping out of relationship on the morning of December 18. It has a tendency to stimulate spiritual ideals but also to awaken occult interests; many will take ‘their first steps into a larger universe’ as existing explanations fail to provide adequate answers. For some, this transit may provide permanently transformative experiences; for others it will be a passing fancy.
Mars squares Uranus on December 14-15. A heightened sense of revolt against authorities may come during the middle part of December due to this transit, which usually sees considerable tension between would-be revolutionaries and more official peacekeepers and command structures. It’s often a time in which underlings chafe against supervisors’ instructions and directives; that’s likely to be especially true in systems where layoffs or end-of-year firings are likely. Remember that creative opposition is more likely to be effective than direct confrontation; similarly, if you’re in a managerial or leadership role, remember that some will need to let off steam.
The Sun squares Saturn on December 16-17. Duty and self-gratification are in direct conflict with one another during this transit. Be careful not to blow your budget for gifts for others, on personal indulgences, but recall that you deserve a treat or two. Notice that the management-labor troubles of the previous days are likely to continue in different forms through the end of the week.
On the Solstice, just after the transit to Capricorn I, the Sun squares Neptune from early Capricorn, while Venus squares Saturn. Surprisingly low energy levels combined with enthusiastic commitment to unrealistic goals are likely to end … poorly. You’re not inadequate but you do need some downtime, and so do the people above you and below you and around you. You may also feel more emotionally distant during the holidays, as well. Bear this in mind between now and New Year’s Eve 2025 — these are temporary conditions and you shouldn’t assume they will last. Don’t use the last ten days of 2025 to plan an ambitious and impossible 2026… or to schedule a conversation with a divorce lawyer… on the basis of the events of the next ten days.
House Delineations
The First House of self and self-presentation is Taurus, ruled by inconjunct Venus in Sagittarius. Uranus is present and retrograde as is the Lunar Perigee; the triplicity rulers of Earth signs are either trine (Moon) or in aversion (Mars, Venus). You may encounter disruptions to self and challenges to your reputation, especially if you try to hold to your traditional norms. Try to have fun by completing projects rather than starting new ones.
The Second House of money and possessions is Gemini ruled by Mercury in aversion from Scorpio. The triplicity rulers of Air signs are in aversion (Jupiter) or square (Saturn). Competing social obligations put pressure on your bank account when friends cry poverty, but then send gifts that must be reciprocated. Respond where you feel a debt is owed, but don’t force new obligations on others.
The Third House of extended family and intimate friends is Cancer, ruled by the sextile Moon in Virgo. Exalted Jupiter retrograde and the Imum Coeli are present. The Water triplicity rulers are either opposed (Venus, Mars) or sextile (Moon). It’s a good time to work a little wealth magic, for close friends and family, but be wary of efforts that require ongoing commitment like a subscription to their service. Keep social occasions lighthearted and fun, but know when to go home.
The Fourth House of home, household, and parents is Leo, ruled by the trining Sun in Sagittarius. The other Fire triplicity lords are inconjunct. Family and household matters require continuing obligations and investment of time and energy, and you will find yourself often trapped between what you would want and what must be done right now. Keep a sharp eye on on fuel and heating systems of your home, and expect to incur some inconvenience from them.
The Fifth House of pleasures and pastimes is Virgo, ruled by the sextile Mercury in Scorpio. The Moon and the South Node are present. Both the other Earth triplicity rulers (Mars, Venus) are square and under the beams of the Sun in Sagittarius. Completing projects already in progress is likely to yield better results than trying to start new ones, especially ones that may be emotionally fraught. Get stuff done that you’ve already begun, and if you have children — help them end the school semester’s work (even if not its official dates) this week.
The Sixth House of daily routines, pets, and injuries is Libra, ruled by sextile Venus. The Air triplicity rulers are either in aversion (Saturn, Mercury) or square (Jupiter). To Market! may be an important part of your upcoming ten days — for goods to give as gifts, and ingredients for holiday feasts and get-togethers, and for the ordinary sustenance. Long range vision may fail — don’t buy too much, too far in advance, lest it spoil; buy with a rational attention to both your financial and social boundaries; create from existing materials what you cannot afford to buy; be cautious of reactionary purchases (e.g., “The Joneses gave us a gift, now I have to give them something better!”) and seek to limit their impact on your budget.
The Seventh House of spouse, peer partners, and rivals is Scorpio, ruled by inconjunct Mars. The Water triplicity rulers are either in aversion (Venus, Mars) or sextile (Moon). Mercury and the Lunar Apogee are present. A spouse or significant other may be deep in acquisitive mode, in order to create a holiday of potentially transformative beauty for many. However, you can expect that not all purchases have been correctly announced to your shared expense files, and some things may suddenly be out of whack.
The Eighth House of obligation, duty and legacy is Sagittarius, ruled by inconjunct Jupiter. The Fire triplicity lords are either present (Sun), square (Saturn), or inconjunct. Venus and Mars are also present. The challenges and chores of the next ten days are philosophical, humane, and even animal in nature, as you face down problems that will require intelligence, compassion, physical effort, and creativity to solve. You’ll do it, and get it all done, but there are costs to be paid that are difficult to put on others’ shoulders in a time of winter.
The Ninth House of higher learning and long-distance travel is Capricorn, ruled by sextile Saturn in Pisces. The Earth triplicity rulers are either inconjunct (Mars, Venus) or trine (Moon). The Midheaven is present. In religious matters and in questions of what and how to learn, it’s time to exercise some level of sovereignty — you’re going to need to pick your destinations for 2026 and start working out the fulfillment plan of intermediate objectives that gets you there. Some of those destinations should be about fun and entertainment, of course, but it’s worth thinking about how you might get home in an emergency — or how to find the right teachers to grow the skills you need, in order to be able to go where you will.
The Tenth House of career and professional reputation is Aquarius, ruled by inconjunct Saturn. The Air triplicity rulers are either in aversion (Saturn, Jupiter) or square (Mercury). Pluto is present. Aquarius is usually characterized as the sign of the work that must be done before the work begins. Whether that’s market analysis, or the forecast for 2026 for your business, or the collection of end-of-year documentation, or the marking of inventory for the after-holiday sales, or the physical preparation of raw materials before they can become your product or service — that’s the season that we’re in for the next ten days. Do the work that needs to be done before the real work: gather the data rather than analyze it; collect the raw materials and hardware rather than start shaping it. Be cautious of toxic or caustic materials especially this week, and handle them with more care than usual.
The Eleventh House of friends, associates, and allies is Pisces, ruled by trining and exalted Jupiter retrograde in Cancer. The triplicity rulers of Water signs are either square (Venus, Mars) or opposed (Moon). Saturn and Neptune are both present along with the North Node. The desire for intimacy and confessional relationships with close friends are stymied by the format and formalities of holiday parties and the false cheer of this year’s “holidays before the holiday” where the vision of what the season ought to be contrasts too harshly with the season that is. Be careful that, in making a temporary holiday palace, you don’t build a prison of debt at the same time.
The Twelfth House of both obstacles and opportunities is Aries, ruled by trining Mars in Sagittarius. The Fire triplicity rulers are either trine (Sun), square (Jupiter) or in aversion (Saturn). Hot-headedness in the cold season can be a disadvantage if you’re making big choices from your heart instead of with more rational advice from friends (whom you probably didn’t consult), or your business partners. It would be a good idea in the next ten days to run your ideas past someone who will absolutely say “yes, with a few caveats and suggestions…” and someone who says, “no, but convince me.” Subjecting your ideas to a wider audience willing to provide good feedback will make these ideas more viable and sustainable in the long run.
Horoscopes by Rising Sign
Decan I of any sign (usually covering the 21st of the month to the first of the following month) is free to all visitors; Decan II is only available to Patreon and Ko-Fi.com subscribers; and Decan III is available to Patreon, Ko-Fi, and MailChimp subscribers.
I recommend reading your Sun sign, Moon sign, and Rising sign for best results. I write them with rising sign in mind, but several people have told me they find that they do better with all three.
Taurus: Approach the coming ten days with a mix of public and private diligence — on the outside you can be gleeful about the coming holidays and the emotional delights and familial connections it brings. Internally, it would be good to let the divine messages of your tradition’s holy days unsettle you a little; when you reflect on your childhood upbringing and historical attachments to the season, are there ways that you’re out of alignment? You may find that you’re standoffish with old friends, while seeking to lead new friends into closer confidences. There’s a temptation to hold secrets from a significant other, but you’d both benefit from a lack of surprises. You can put a lot of effort into making the most outstanding holiday ever, but remember that all the ‘stuff’ you acquire still has to get put away somewhere, and needs to be paid for.
Gemini: You may feel that you’re trapped under a microscope as a partner or spouse examines your financial decision-making with close attention. You may have to communicate your long-term plans and objectives to get clear of this scrutiny, and that may require breaking some of your long-held guardedness around oversharing. However, a bit of disruption of past habits may be a necessary part of growing up or facing the delays that your workplace or supervisor imposes upon your vision. Big economic benefits are likely to accrue to you and your household once you explain your big plan — but in the short term you should expect that you’ll have to dig deep into the art supplies to finish up some holiday gifts for exchange, rather than going to the store.
Cancer: you may have to be the big spender for your extended family and friends, but chances are you can make magic happen for the important people in your life. Some of your friends are likely to be disruptive influences, and may cause you to take a step back from their current bruhahas. Your big travel plans may face a few significant delays, especially whenever they cross over water. Your routines for both work and play will require considerable attention and renegotiation with a spouse or significant other or professional colleague — trading off hours, jiggering times to be on call, and so on – but it’s likely to go very smoothly. Put off your natural habits of waiting for others to tell you what they want; take the lead and rebuild the calendar to your liking, and see if everyone is OK with that afterwards. You’re more likely to get your way if you set the first draft.
Leo: being a responsible homebody during a big social season is not always fun, but on the other hand “many have entertained angels unawares.” Invite a few folks to afternoon tea, and you may find that it suits your current needs a lot more than a big party or adventurous outing. Pinching pennies may be necessary, but there is beauty to be found in a careful rearrangement of your household; and there is delight to be found in creating obligatory gift; consider the possibilities of small but high-quality presents that are designed to be used up. You need a big long range plan, but you will set unrealistic goals if you don’t give yourself a kind-hearted retrospective of past ambitions. A little belt tightening at work might not be such a bad idea.
Virgo: A review of unfinished projects and hobbyhorse endeavors would do you some good; finishing up some old stuff before the year’s end would bring a degree of contentment that is unlikely to be found in friendships or social activities — yet accepting those invitations to communal events will feel like the right thing, but may ultimately prove not as satiating as you’d like. A focus on family tasks and doing household chores together with your housemates will bring satisfaction to all, but selling that inner circle on the value of it may prove challenging. Your own inner critic is likely to be unhappy with your daily reports and the completion rates of your underlings — but it may be worth remembering the strains and austerities you and your team are currently operating under: adjust your expectations to match the current reality.
Libra: you may find that it is a “nose to the grindstone” kind of week, but that the focus is on helping your inner circle, and extended family, rather than achieving professional results for your career. There are some big professional projects coming up, but your role is likely to be better suited to conducting a big picture analysis of past efforts, rather than orienting to future results. A Frank talk about money and possessions might do both you and your significant other a lot of good; something certainly needs to change for a more vital future (especially together). Your heart is in a re-orientation of long range plans, and you may find yourself drawn to the idea of picking up a new hobby (if you have a kid, though, be wary of buying them new art supplies this week). Resist the temptation to be critical of your past amateur efforts, though; quality is ever downstream of regular practice, except when beginner’s luck prevails.
Scorpio: your success in coming days may depend upon collecting secrets and shared confidences from friends and significant others. That is especially true if you are looking at your bank account and finding it is only capable of supporting your regular life expenses, and not the risks of coming holidays, and the expectation of gift exchange. Meeting the presuppositions of the season will require both a degree of discipline and creativity, which you have in spades. Yet there may be unexpected criticism of your endeavors from unwarranted quarters — like a boss or supervisor with poor boundaries. Whatever project you undertake, it would be a good idea to ask yourself, how can I simplify this? before you begin. Additionally, you should be prepared to catch a significant other, who may be a falling risk. Going on a road trip with a close friend, even to the grocery store, brings a surprising trip down memory lane as a well of contentment.
Sagittarius: you may be trapped between a rock and a hard place this coming week; at your best, you can be a moderating and mediating influence between your creativity and your ambition, as you work to secure important legacies. Attending to your finances will require a fair bit of new learning; but you may not be able to leave the house much. Your honest hopes for others may come across as unnecessary or unwelcome criticism; plan to be gentler and kinder then you think is appropriate. None of the days coming up is likely to be much like the last 10 days, or even like each other. Be prepared for rapid changes of plans. At the same time, be generous in delivering your expected labors, and recognize that you must do the work of your vocation even if it brings limited rewards or delight this week.
Capricorn: Travel matters take center stage, even if it’s just a short jaunt across town — but be wary of local rush hours and weather conditions. Leave the phone in the glove compartment or your pocket, please — and be personally attentive to your money habits, rather than letting others criticize you for either miserliness or overly generous presentations. It’s worth making magic for a significant other, but be up-front if you want to go from sharing secrets to sharing fluids. Taking inventory of your pastimes may lead you to part with some of your surplus materials, but don’t get rid of anything that you feel is expressive of your deeper desires. You’re more likely than most to be planning with too much ambition for 2026; get a friend to show you how to scale back or overlap plans for best results.
Aquarius: you may feel it’s wise to “lock in” for the remainder of the year, in order to achieve some big goals; but your objectives will be the same size and same shape on January 1 as they are today — starting early won’t help you get ahead. Feel free to wander farther afield these next ten days. Instead, focus on your needier and less able friends and family. Put your energies into the current moment, and help your household meet their own needs and expectations in the current bedlam. Be attentive to your daily practices and express gratitude for the emergent but quotidian delights: a sudden run-in with friends, an act of gratitude from a client or colleague, a professional kudo. Communicate a better data collection and dissemination plan to your workplace for better end-of-year results for everyone.
Pisces: a lot of big social plans may fall through this coming week, and you may find that your hunger for things that can’t come about is rather large. Shield yourself from disappointment by remembering to keep a few friends on speed dial, and call up a few folks for when sudden changes of plans are inevitable. Even these sorts of spontaneous events don’t have to be a coffee date; try to include a little creative labor in the most unrehearsed moments. A spouse or significant other may face a rough deadline; you don’t have to hold space for them, but you do have to make peace with their hardships. Your own professional labors should have you tracking deadlines carefully, but also reviewing past endeavors and seeing what you can pull from the archives to make everyone’s load a little lighter.
Aries: big visionary projects are likely to fall apart this week, especially if you let enthusiasm get in the way of fact. Remember that you cannot push rope; allow extemporaneous events to arise, rather than trying to force things to conform to a calendar or daily schedule. You may need to rethink your plan to open your home to others, but contentment is likely to arise in any case. Be cautious about trying to monetize your friendships, it’s like to end with a lot of critical feedback, even if it yields short term results. You will need to travel in order to demonstrate dependability, but you may wind up, showing off both your creative side and your gift gift for solving problems all the way down to their foundational support systems. Wherever you can, don’t simply solve the problem, but document your solution.
