The Sun enters Capricorn at the moment of the Northern Hemisphere’s winter solstice, on 21 December 2025 at 10:03 am EST. Austin Coppock called this decan The Headless Body, and T. Susan Chang called it The Difference Engine. The Golden Dawn associated this decan with the two of pentacles — a blindfolded woman sitting on a wharf or pier carrying the two swords crossed over her chest.

The Greeks appear to have associated this time of year with Asclepius, the physician god associated with Paion, the physician mentioned in the Iliad as the paramount healer in the Achaean (Greek) army. Famed for his ability to heal others and even (once) to revivify the dead, Zeus struck him down by lightning for his impertinence in restoring to life what was already dead and for pulling souls out of Hades’ realm. Shown as either the father, husband, teacher, student, or son of Hygeia, the goddess of good health, he’s typically imagined as the constellation Ophiuchus — a Greek word that literally means “snake carrier”. The primary star of this constellation is alpha Ophiuchus, one of those stars with an originally Arabic name, Rasalhague, “head of the snake charmer”. Today, the star is found at about 22° Sagittarius 17′, and is associated with doctors, nurses and healers — as well as as overmedication, toxic egotism, and sexual scandal. After the Sun is in Capricorn I at 0° or further on, this star just becomes visible on the eastern horizon before dawn.
It’s perhaps appropriate that this decan is administered by Mercury — the skillful practice of medicine requires both attention to detail and a sense of the big picture, as would be appropriate for a sign ruled by Jupiter and a decan administered by Mercury. The herald-god of the planets is famous for expertise and skill in dodging tricky questions, in ordering more tests, and in quickly adjusting their bedside manner to suit the patient’s needs and expectations. More than a few of my readers have had negative experiences with doctors or nurses, I suspect — and yet one really good doctor can help slot numerous diverse pieces of information into place such that healing (or at least treatment) becomes possible.
The dodeks, or twelfth-parts, of Sagittarius III are assigned to Leo, Virgo, Libra and Scorpio. These represent the performer — musician, storyteller, dancer or poet — who uses each performance to aspire to something greater. First they perform, then they analyze their performance to see what was good or bad. They make adjustments in how they intend to perform in the future, and then practice that new intentionality in new ways for the future, but do so in secret.
Dates to Watch
- December 21 — Sun squares Neptune, and Venus squares Saturn. Dulled energy and loss of imaginative possibilities will be common, and discouragement may set in as self-confidence ebbs. You will experience reservations about freinds and family and may feel yourself withdrawing from others with a sense of isolation, or that they don’t meet certain expectations or standards. You may feel an acute sense of loss, as people fail to deliver on the minimum. Beware falling into the trap of believing the holidays are ruined, though — or your friendships, romances, or partnerships. This feeling will pass.
- December 24, 11:26 am EST — Venus enters Capricorn. The passage from Sagittarius to an Earth sign raises the goddess planet’s position from a peregrine planet to a triplicity ruler taking on new authority. Don’t slouch around in your pajamas today; dress like you’re taking command.
- December 24 2:42 pm EST — Moon squares Uranus. Be cautious about the rum soaked eggnog tonight; you’re liable to make hasty decisions that come back to bite you later; or to reject commonsense ideas simply because you’re in an oppositional mood. Excitement and drama will be desirable to you, but that disinterest in rest is likely to disturb or distract others. Remember that this transit is fleeting; while you may escape its direct effects, it’s likely to hit others in your orbit too.
- December 27, 2:03 am EST — Moon conjuncts Neptune. Both fantasies and nightmares are likely to be supercharged tonight, so it’s good to focus on your more favorable dreams and visions over dinner, rather than your fears. Be sympathetic to people with negative emotions, but hold to your boundaries.
- December 30 — Mercury squares Saturn. If you have heavy mental thinking to do over the holidays, either for work or for household management, this is the day to do it — unless it involves negotiating a contract or hiring a new employee or getting hired. Nobody is going to do a good job making themselves understood today, even if it is a good day for a sweaty intellectual workout.
House Delineations
It’s north noting that all of the planets except Jupiter are in the eastern (the old term is orientall [sic]) half of the chart — which is usually an indication that you, dear reader, will have to take the initiative in all the things that you’d like to have happen in the next ten days. For example, don’t wait for other people to call you up and suggest a get-together; offer the plans yourself.
The First House of self and self-presentation is Aquarius, ruled by inconjunct Saturn in Pisces; Pluto is present. Among the air triplicity rulers, only Mercury forms an aspect, a sextile from Sagittarius. It will be easy to say “humbug!” with Ebeneezer Scrooge this year to the holiday season by critiquing those who stand to profit the most from it, and to construct a meaner or crueler celebration for yourself out of spite. Yet remember to communicate with friends, “we have warmth and shelter and let’s partake of food, stories and song together,” and you may find that your gold and silver will stretch farther.
The Second House of money and possessions is Pisces, ruled by trining Jupiter exalted but retrograde in Cancer. Saturn and Neptune and the North Node are all present. The water triplicity rulers are either sextile (Moon, Mars) or square (Venus). Both positive change, and the stresses of the end of year, are likely to bring both woe and weal to many. Financial matters and possessions are a source of delight and joy, but also of worry and stress. End of year bonuses may arrive — but also notices about reduction in force. Attend to your long-range monetary plans and know you’ll make progress — but be prepared for setbacks, either for yourself or to assist friends. You will need more resources to support your beliefs — and this may mean spending more than you planned.
The Third House of extended family and intimate friends is Aries, ruled by squaring Mars exalted in Capricorn. The fire triplicity rulers are either square (Jupiter, Sun) or inconjunct (Saturn). Daily routines and long-term pressures are adding up to put a lot of heat on local conditions, extended family, and your inner circle of confidants. It’s easy to overschedule yourself, so leave room for the spontaneous… just make sure it’s cheap.
The Fourth House of home, household, and parents is Taurus, ruled by inconjunct Venus. The other earth triplicity rulers are trine (Mars, Moon). Uranus is present and retrograde. Attempts to introduce minimalism or austerities into the family or household dynamic this holiday season are likely to bring about fireworks and explosive discussions. The long-term consequences are likely to be disregarded in favor of immediate gratification.
The Fifth House of pleasures and pastimes is Gemini, ruled by opposing Mercury in detriment. The other air triplicity rulers are either square (Saturn) or in aversion. The Lunar Perigee and Imum Coeli are present. Delight and contentment are found in intellectual hobbies and in sating (or attempting to sate) the curiosities of children. Adult friendship times are likely to be interrupted by teaching kids to use their hands and bodies in service to seasonal activities.
The Sixth House of daily routines, pets, and injuries is Cancer, ruled by opposing Moon. Jupiter is exalted but retrograde. The water triplicity rulers are opposed (Mars, Moon) or inconjunct (Venus). Daily activities focus on what feels good, and what feels good is expansive, generous, rich, luxuriant and magical. Charles Dickens’ Ghost of Christmas Present from a Christmas Carol demonstrates this welter of wealth as a spirit of abundance — but Dickens also showed how his robe covered over two abandoned children named “Ignorance” and “Want.” Address yourself daily to social ills as well as social niceties.
The Seventh House of spouse, peer partners, and rivals is Leo, ruled by the inconjunct Sun. The fire triplicity rulers are inconjunct (Sun, Jupiter, Saturn). Relationships with spouses or significant others are likely to be performative and stable this week, but you should remain focused on helping them win honor and recognition even in the short term — help them be mindful of both expenditures and long-term planning, even as you support the daily routines that create delight.
The Eighth House of obligation, duty and legacy is Virgo, ruled by squaring and detrimented Mercury in Sagittarius. The South Node is present. Every obligation seems to require technical fixes or a need to bring skills to bear on what should be a relatively simple problem — yet every chore carries with it a host of expanding complexities. You may have to call in friends with technical skills to resolve some problems, but try not to let the details bog down the big picture.
The Ninth House of higher learning and long-distance travel is Libra, ruled by sextile Venus in Sagittarius. The air triplicity rulers are inconjunct (Saturn), square (Jupiter), or sextile (Mercury). Long-distance travel and higher educational matters are likely to resolve with a mix of delays that cost money, detours that connect with friends in challenging times — and moments of chaotic, graceful magic. If you get snowed in at an airport, stay with friends if you can; buy lunch or a coffee for a fellow passenger during a delay; celebrate the end of exams with a Mari Lwyd.
The Tenth House of career and professional reputation is Scorpio, ruled by sextile Mars exalted in Capricorn. The earth triplicity rulers are either sextile (Mars, Moon) or inconjunct (Venus). Career matters and public reputation are likely to face a mix of imaginary long-term potential (“we’d like to interview you for a new position” or “have you considered doing this work freelance?”) combined with apparent real-world threats (“we’re eliminating this role at this company.”) Be aware that not all threats are real, and not all possibilities are vaporware — but test the veracity of all chance rumors and possible perils in the end-of-year office sweepstakes.
The Eleventh House of friends, associates, and allies is Sagittarius, ruled by inconjunct but exalted Jupiter, and hosting Venus, Mercury, the Lunar Apogee and the Midheaven. Your fans and allies, and second-tier friends and acquaintances, are rooting for you and helping to make the magic happen — but more slowly than you’d like yet with a mixture of business connections that will earn you money, and social contacts that will bring delight. You’ll have to sort out which kind of connection is which, though, and some hilarious mismatches may occur.
The Twelfth House of both obstacles and opportunities is Capricorn, ruled by sextile Saturn in Pisces. The Sun is present, along with earth triplicity rulers Mars and the Moon; Venus is inconjunct. Physicality and a desire to be strong will be important goals to set in the last ten days of the year, but if you’ve been a couch potato for a while it’s important not to overdo it: Festina lente, said the Romans: “make haste, slowly.” Be alert to the ways that medicine is also poison; and that poison in small doses can be medicine — overindulgence in anything is risky. Keep some emotional focus on what will occur in the first ten days of January, especially if you know that difficulty is coming your way — it will work out, but you still have to use the joys of now to bank your reserves for then.
Horoscopes by Rising Sign
Decan I of any sign (usually covering the 21st of the month to the first of the following month) is free to all visitors; Decan II is only available to Patreon and Ko-Fi.com subscribers; and Decan III is available to Patreon, Ko-Fi, and MailChimp subscribers.
I recommend reading your Sun sign, Moon sign, and Rising sign for best results. I write them with rising sign in mind, but several people have told me they find that they do better with all three.
Aquarius: it is important to be a critic of the systems in which you participate at this holiday season. But — remember the ways in which you also participate in these systems as a stakeholder and beneficiary. Recognize that your public criticisms of professional systems, for example, can disrupt your household income, and a piece of mind of the people who share your roof. There are going to be times in this coming week at holiday parties when maybe you should hold your tongue. Or else remember that leisure and hobbies are an important form of social nicety engage in those conversations around peoples creativity and loves rather than professional matters or long-term plans.
Pisces: your budget and actual funds may be outrun by the challenges of the moment, as where your vision of where you would be at the end of the year, confronts the actual reality. Hold onto the hopes that you had past January as the year ends; but also remember the errors and difficulties that led to your current constraints. Understand that your circumstances right now are both a palace and a trap: you can see yourself as restricted or caged, or live with gratitude with the delights that you currently have. to succeed, note the ways in which your profession has brought you into connection with the right kinds of skills; and brought you the right kinds of contacts for launching yourself to the next thing next year.
Aries: in many ways, you are defined by your most intimate circles of friends and family, but your professional responsibilities may take you away from that crowd in upsetting fashion over the next 10 days. Recognize that this will bring disruptions, both pleasant and unpleasant, to your end of your finances. You can imagine a different way forward, but you should also be realistic about what you can achieve between now and the end of the year. Talking aloud through your travel plans out loud and stating your inventory of important documents and to-do lists will be annoying to other people, but you are more likely to get everything that you need, done — and bring the right stuff with you.
Taurus: the holidays bring a tumultuous crowd into your home and your ideas about what constitutes a perfect aesthetic may be at war with your ideas about proper hospitality. When you visit others, you may find that your alarm bells are similarly triggered by friends not stepping up to the proper standards — but it’s better than being betrayed by your colleagues. You have certain idealistic expectations about what the next few days should be like, but it may be difficult to silence your own personal worst critic. Try to adopt a generous attitude toward those you admit to your inner circle.
Gemini: your spouse or significant other may be telling you important things about friends and allies, but is it falling on deaf ears? Your personal contentment comes from doing things for yourself, and nostalgia for “how it used to be” may be top of your mind. You may want to jam a stick into the bicycle wheel of your past, and let the whole season come to a sudden halt, though, when faced with the professional vision and unprofessional incompetence of fiscal mismanagement in your workplace. Travel plans will balloon out of your control at the slightest provocation, and you may still chafe against long-heralded restrictions to routines. Rest and breathe through the first reaction; then do the work needed to salvage the moment.
Cancer: without doubt, you have scheduled too much in the coming days. There’s no shame in it, recognize the magic that you were trying to create, and the abundance that you were trying to manifest. Yet you cannot help others if you become yourself like too little butter spread over too much bread. An argument, or a separation from a spouse or significant other, may be in the offering for unexpected reasons. It doesn’t have to be permanent, but if your travel plans are set awry, make sure that each person leaves with the documents that are specific to them. You owe yourself some financial education before the end of the year.
Leo: “familiarity breeds contempt,” runs the proverb, and it’s worth considering the ways in which you criticize important peers in your world: business partners, romantic partners, spouses, and even rivals. These next 10 days you will be defined as much by who you choose to ally yourself with or oppose, as by what you yourself do. Some of this will involve having visible fun with friends and family; other parts of it will be the hidden emotional and visionary work that you do at a very high level for others. Your long-term thinking will be much influenced by the past, as you make your plans for 2026. There are some professional disturbances that may hit in these last ten days, which will leave you scrambling to find new gigs to cover missing paydays —it’s likely to work out fine, but you should plan to strap yourself in to do a little extra here and there.
Virgo: nobody has a license to print money, but you may feel like you want one this week. Luxuries can feel like a trap; but too much austerity can be equally disruptive, especially at a time that involves the changing of the guard and the turning of the year. Be open with others about what’s going on at home, and at the same time prepared to turn all of your leftovers into delicacies and delights for the future. As you finish your last-minute craft project for the year, be careful about keeping tools, sharp, and storing them properly. Review long-term and habitual expenses like monthly subscriptions. Spend a little time with important partners reviewing your long-term financial goals, and current realities.
Libra: I hope your next 10 days involves some good travel plans, and that you will see friends in public settings, where you will not be expected to share intimate confidences or reveal secrets. Be mindful when you are in public spaces that you can break the rules a little bit, but that you want to avoid over sharing. It is a good time for being enthusiastic about your team members and their successes this past year, but you should follow up with a private and more realistic goal setting for 2026. Your own job description may come in for some revisions that may affect how you choose to live at home. Take colds and fevers seriously in these end of year days. Don’t blow your budget on craft supplies, even if there is a substantial discount.
Scorpio: it’s almost always a drag when your professional reputation needs to be shored up at the end of the year. Be ambitious in laying out your 2026 goals to a boss or supervisor, but be realistic about actual costs of living if you are demanding a raise. Sharing salary information is considered gauche in the United States; but you may want to break the rules and provide colleagues with more accurate information. That may bring a certain level of contentment and peace of mind, but it won’t necessarily earn you any favors; and it may bring trouble with your professional associates. If you have not yet had your office Christmas party, you should plan to bring your spouse or significant other — they are certain to make a splash. If your end of year plans include a lot of travel, you might want to take down some notes on various side, projects and personal hobbies, so that you can return to them easily after the holiday. Anything you put down now is likely not to be picked up again for a while.
Sagittarius: your public role, and public persona, are going to be very much front and center over the next ten days— it’s worth thinking about how to break with traditions, even as you form new ones. You should not expect that you were going to be able to keep your finances in order over these last days of December, things are likely to spiral beyond your control. Recognize the hit, and allow yourself a certain amount of relief once it’s over. Offering care and support to others can feel magnanimous, but it can also lead to potentially toxic criticism. Despite your best efforts and vision, home may still feel harsh and unwelcome, but it’s still where you want to be. Surprising, chores, and delightful duties, will appear out of nowhere. Be hospitable, help your spouse or significant other wear a crown of victory, and recognize that you won’t get much done professionally this week
Capricorn: pay attention to what you are doing with tools, with your health, and with your exercise equipment in the gym. Pay attention to what you’re putting in your mouth too: this is a week for losing yourself in the affairs of the body rather than remembering your soul purposes — and it will be easy to lose yourself in hierarchies of food, drink, and entertainment. Find a middle way. Worrying too much about money spent is likely to be toxic, but you may not be able to help yourself in the face of the conversations among members of your inner circle. Of all the signs, you have the best chance to write good New Year’s resolutions before the actual day arrives — but it would be good to focus on intellectual and aesthetic goals rather than ambitious physical or professional ones. Your hobbies are likely to shift in the coming year — don’t make any new investments in equipment just yet. A spouse or significant other may be looking to have a more elaborate holiday than you had in mind — some conversations and back-up planning may be in order.
