Various Matters

Various items are on my mind to share with readers:

1. I have received authors’ copies of Scion: Hero. I’d like to run a demo of it sometime in the near-ish future, which either means coming down here to northeast Connecticut and putting up with my students this weekend or next weekend, or someone volunteering space for the game on a Monday night (not this Monday, because it’s Passover, and not next Monday, because my sweetie and I aren’t getting much time together these days), or this (I repeat, this) Thursday, before my Armory class picks up again in mid-April.
1.0.1 I have also been paid for Scion at the same time, which is a first for White Wolf. Usuallythey take their full month (sometimes more) to pay me back. This time, I’ve got check in hand at the same time the books arrived.

2. I have been in DC for a week for the annual school field trip.
2.0.1 I had a good time, I learned a lot, I got to see the Tuskegee Airmen receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. It was such a tremendous gift to lead my kids in a round of applause for a former fighter pilot who fought for a country that wouldn’t even let him vote because of the color of his skin. He was so gracious, too. “I should be applauding you!” he shouted to us from his wheelchair. But no, he deserves standing ovations from everyone, white and black and red and yellow and maybe even green.
2.0.2 It was really cool to see his grandson in a US Air Force dress uniform, with the gold medal — as big as my palm! Bigger! — in his hands.
2.1 Apparently two Republicans repeatedly mispronounced “Tuskegee” during the award ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda, to widesperead murmurrings. They really ought to know better.
2.2 My apologies for not seeing any of you who live in DC during my visit. I was, as I said, there on the annual school field trip, and it was busy in the extreme. Maybe next year.

3. Eleven people are descending on my house on Monday night for a Pesach Seder, put together by the mother of one of my students. Yes, Isaac, you and your lovely bride are invited. E-mail me and I’ll fill you in on the details.

4. I read Sou MacMillan’s Novel Chrysanthemum on the train ride back from Washington, DC to Connecticut. It is an awesome read. Go out and buy/beg/borrow a copy. I give it FIVE STARS. Full-scale review forthcoming, after I have a chance to mull on it a bit.

5. I have been fabulously unproductive today. It’s both frustrating and exhilarating.

6. I’ve been dismayingly unproductive about poetry this winter, and I find it wearing. Every time I sit down to write a poem, something else beans me in the head to do, usually not very important — or else very important and worthy of immediate attention. I’ve been writing other stuff, just not poetry.

I miss you, poetry. Why don’t we ever hang out any more?

7. Classes start again Monday. I have no idea what I’m going to be teaching.

No kiddin’, huh? I swear I’m getting worse at consistent communication in my, um, older age. That, and 6 years at the same ultra full time job is wearin’ me down. Ha!

  2. Re: The things I learn…

I’m thinking about making the jump to a Pro account on flickr myself as I ponder all these “before” pictures of my house that I want to post in a before/after section. It’s great to have taken the “before” pictures for the house as I make it the way I want.

Now I’m thinking about doing the same with my own “house” which is a temple (aka my physical being). I’m already starting to lose weight – it’s amazing how many things are tied to emotions and when you change the emotions you change the other physically and emotionally dependent aspects as well.

I really do need to get out and do more with people I enjoy spending time with – like the two of you. 🙂

I’m still waiting for another firewalk so I can finally do it – now is a perfect time for me, as everything is changing and I could use the centering effect I think it would have (as well as the boost in confidence).

  3. Re: The things I learn…

I write gaming manuals. (hides now).

There are only four survivors of the Great War known to be still alive, and actually one of them died a day after I saw the article that there were only four, now that I think about it.

I should post another round of photos, but I really want to start an architecture set, and it’s hard to do that with only a free account. so I should go pro. Except that I’m not, at least not yet, a pro. And I still don’t have a paid LJ account, either. What to do, what to do?

It will be good to see you again soon. and I are looking forward to it.

Snowy Egret. That sounds right. I should really ask my mom.

… hi! Long time, no type. nor see. Nor communicate.

We really should work on that.

  5. The things I learn…

…I didn’t know you wrote game manuals or games, Andrew! Multi-talented, indeed.

I was reading about the Tuskeegee awards ceremony in conjunction with an article that said they hadn’t currently planned to have a ceremony when the last veteran of WWI (aka the Great War) dies. It had been pointed out that perhaps it would be better to commemorate it while they’re still alive (they’re all in their 90s or above 100). Being there must have been a great experience.

Sometimes I think I might try gaming. Being that so many of my friends do that, and lately I feel like I’m learning about myself in ways I should have done when I was sixteen, what better time to start.

Looking forward to seeing you at some point and catching up. Enjoying being your Flickr friend and it’s inspiring me to take more pictures and get better at it so I can do what I imagine it to look like in my mind.

Well, come to a game demo or the book signing at Rising Phoenix Games, and we’ll do something then-ish.

    • Re: The things I learn…

If you’re so inclined, plz let me know when the book signing is. If you post it on the LJ, I will most certainly see it!

  7. about your flicker pictures

The flower is definitely a hibiscus.
The white bird is or is related to a snowy egret, kind of in the heron family. I am pretty sure.
    And…hi!

So let’s schedule indian food the next time I have some time free on a weekend.

Um… which I think would be June. :-/

  9. It was great…

I kept reading bits and thinking, “Oh, yeah… I remember this.” And then realizing that it’s not where I expected it to be in the story, and having to read more closely.

It’s much tighter and well-played than I recalled it being on the first read, and it sings in a lot of places, even during Paul’s continuing illness. I’d also forgotten the absence of closure at the end, and it was a powerful reminder that we don’t always get what we want. I also like that Shocklogic’s first play-out date is AFTER all that, and…

Well, I could go on gushing, but then other readers of these comments will wonder whether they even have to read the book. So I won’t do that.

I’ve already loaned it to one of the teachers here at school. When I get it back, I’ll likely read it again, if only to wonder, “Now why can’t I write one of these here novel-things?”

  10. omgosh – Andrew, i am thrilled that you dug the book – seeing as you are a Big Reader, you are one of the people i was most interested in hearing about the read from ♥

  12. I have received authors’ copies of Scion: Hero.

I would love to have a copy, are you interested in any trades?

    I have copies of:

The Compass of Celestial Directions 1: The Blessed Isle for Exalted

The Magic Item Compendium by WOTC for D&D 3.5 &

Atlantis: The Second Age from Morrigan Press

and in a few days, I will have copies of:

Mage Intruders Encounters With the Abyss For Mage: The Awakening

Are you interested in trading any of these for a copy of Scion?

Speaking of payment, they did the same thing with my payment for my latest Exalted book, they paid me within 3 days of the release date, definitely a first and much appreciated.
