Sonnet for the Nones of October

Wild grapes drop, distribute seeds like alms:
charity for the next generation.
Mighty wind roars, but then trembles and calms;
walnut spreads plumage to adulation.
One crow fixes eyes on possum in road.
Orange mushrooms spread from felled, rotted trunk,
becoming springboards for feisty tree toad.
Soon squirrel beds down, with leaves for his bunk,
and broad coverlet. Pear ripens, apple crisps,
chestnuts congregate amid dying grass.
Rain clouds shatter into tendrils and wisps —
atmosphere unfettering moisture’s mass.
Everywhere, earth is cleaning, letting go,
and girding her strength to take on the snow.
