Working the Back Forty

This afternoon I went out into the woods with some kids, and a maul and an axe, and chopped wood for several hours. My hands are all dinged and banged up, and they ache. My arms ache too, but there’s a great big stack of wood that’s been halved and quartered and rendered to flinders for starting fires. It looks good, and my soul is at peace right now. It feels good to be alive, even if I ache. And my friend Brian points out, my hands and arms will only hurt for a few days, and then I’ll be more used to the work. And my soul will still feel good.

Tried writing a double canzone today, and didn’t succeed, at least not the first try. They’re complicated, because you have only five rhymes, but something like sixty lines. They work better in their native Italian, I bet, than in English. Rather than trying to write it by hand, I ought to try writing it on the computer

Taught three of my dept’s chair’s classes today, as well, talking about Alexander the Great. It was good, and largely accurate, but it made for a long day; I taught all of my classes, as well, which means that I had a six-class day today, plus a study hall, plus sports and meals. I still have dorm duty tonight. I have about the next hour off — I was going to have from 6:30 to 8:30 free, but I got asked to teach the confirmation class on Church History tomorrow night. I didn’t want to do it on my night off, so I moved it to tonight. Meant a longer day, but at least when tomorrow ends, it’s actually going to be the end of the day.

Figured out how much money I have, and sent in checks to my credit card company, and to two summer pagan festivals. I’ll be going to SpiritFire, now, for sure. Also and I will be in California for Firedance, for sure. We’re registered and paid for.

I guess that’s it for now. More later if I think of something, or tomorrow.
