Tonight, I improv’ed a piece. I wasn’t happy with any of the ones I had with me. I don’t know whether it sucked or not. Then went to Denny’s afterward. Tim, Bob, Ted and me. Not a bad crowd. We had a good time.
Morris was on tonight; so was Dave, though his first piece was zero’ed on account of a Props Violation. The rest of the slam was ‘less so’. I’m finally starting to like Raphael’s stuff, though I also am not sure I understand all the excitement about his poetry. Oh, well.
Tired, must sleep — clowns have already eaten me.
Rafeal is getting there as a performer but he truly shines on the page. I spent part of an afternoon reading his chapbook aloud to myself and being amazed about what is there. Good strong stuff that will only get stronger. He is only a senior in high school. I think what I am excited about is that he is just starting and he already has a grasp of many aspects of poetry and writing that took me a lot longer to get, like in my thirties if at all.
