Sun in Cancer III 2026

The Sun enters Cancer III on 12 July 2026 at 3:46 am EDT. Called The Overflowing Cup, it is associated in Tarot with the 4 of Cups. To the ancient Greeks it was the season of the goddess Hecate, the deity of magic and the crossroads who is said to keep the keys of the terrestrial, celestial and infernal realms. It is ruled by the Moon, as is perhaps appropriate for the season in which the days of the northern hemisphere start to trade minutes with the night, as the long hours between sunrise and sunset start to recede. T Susan Chang called this decan Refusing the Call, while The Overflowing Cup name comes from Austin Coppock. The Sun will be present here for ten days, eleven hours and twenty-seven minutes, ending on 22 July 2026 at 3:13 pm EDT — and with the publication of this column, I complete seven years of publishing astrology columns, and begin my eighth year.

The ancient Greeks learned to associate this decan with Hekate or Hecate, the goddess of magic and the three-way crossroads. Thomas Taylor in his “translation” of the Orphic Hymn to Hecate (which he made part of the last lines of Hymn #1, to Musaeus), writes:

I call Einodian Hecate, lovely dame,
Of earthly, wat'ry, and celestial frame,
Sepulchral, in a saffron veil array'd,
Pleas'd with dark ghosts that wander thro' the shade;
Persian, unconquerable huntress hail!
The world's key-bearer never doom'd to fail,
On the rough rock to wander thee delights,
Leader and nurse be present to our rites
Propitious grant our just desires success,
Accept our homage, and the incense bless.

The “three-way crossroads” is here understood to be the three realms of earth, sea, and sky — and maybe a fourth, that of the underworld of the dead? Perhaps the Four of Cups, instead of being understood as a young man tired of being offered the same old thing over and over, could be understood as a magus or sorcerer coming into their power with some level of mastery over the four realms?

The four dodeks of Cancer III are associated with Pisces (The Ecstasy), Aries (the Doused Flame), Taurus (the Comfortable Bed), and Gemini (Helper’s Hands). They point to one of the key problems of the interior emotional life of Cancer — which is how much it centers on the interiority and inner vision of the late degrees of Cancer. Not only is the sign itself ruled by the Moon, but these last ten degrees are also administrated by the Moon. On the level of the terms/bounds, the first six are managed by Venus (who, while connective and tactful, is not always the best communicator), and the last four are managed by Saturn the perpetually lonely and isolated. There’s a tendency, as a result, to focus on the bad news and the passivity of waiting for more information whether good or bad. But we should remember that excellence flows from some sort of imaginative action and appreciation of beauty: go look at lovely things, friends, and then seek to recreate some portion of that loveliness in your own life. Or, as the Reverend Erik Arneson would say it, and as Hekate might agree, keep doing magic. It’s the only way to get Earth, Sea and Sky to do your bidding.

Dates to Watch

Barbeault’s Basket peaks during the July 17-22 window this year, with the arrangement of the four planets involved — Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto — reaching their moment of maximum closeness on July 19 during the FIFA World Cup’s championship game, currently scheduled to take place at the Meadowlands in the New Jersey suburbs of New York City.

As I’ve discussed in the last column and the one before, this combination was discovered by French astrologer André Barbeault, who died in October 2019 before he could live to see the results of a configuration that he thought would usher in a new age of global peace and harmonious relationships across the world. A Basket is a configuration of planets that involves one (1) opposition, in this case between Pluto in Aquarius and Jupiter in Leo); two (2) trines, here between Pluto and Uranus in Gemini, and Jupiter and Neptune; and three (3) sextiles: Pluto to Neptune, Neptune to Uranus, and Uranus to Jupiter. The result is a kind of parallelogram of classical aspects in one half of the chart which spreads across the sky. Since two of the planets are on the side of the sky that includes the Sun, there will never be a moment when all four planets are observable at the same time.

July 12 — Sun conjuncts Mercury, Venus square Uranus — Sometimes loving relationships still need a pick-me-up or shock to the system, and with Mercury’s retrograde cazimi coinciding with Venus at 90° to Uranus, you might a) find yourself picking a fight with a long-term partner in order to trigger the make-up sex that follows, or b) just want something out in the open that’s been brewing for a long time, or c) be out for a wider range of possibilities and flirting a little more sincerely with a new interest than usual. Don’t let your mouth run too far ahead of what you’re willing to do, though… or spend money you don’t have

July 17 — Moon conjuncts Venus — a great day for socializing and meeting friends and gathering with loved ones. Great day for beautifying your house, too, and making a performance out of social occasions. Overindulgence likely.

July 18 — Mars trines Saturn — A great day for setting up ambitious long-term plans, or to engage in intricate or detail oriented work that requires both patience and precision. Self-gratifiication unlikely to be as enjoyable as you’d like, nor self-care — do something that feels worthy of recognition by others, and engage either self-discipline to do something hard, or personal determination to restrain yourself from something too easy. Self-denial may feel righteous or responsible.

House Delineations

The First House of self and self-presentation is Gemini, ruled by inconjunct Mercury. The other two Air triplicity rulers are sextile (Saturn, Jupiter). Uranus, Mars and the Moon are present. Thunderstorms and heat waves persist but are diminished in size and force. It is acceptable to be two people in public; starting an exercise program is likely to bring out both beauty and strength.

The Second House of money and possessions is Cancer, ruled by the inconjunct Moon. The other two Water triplicity rulers are inconjunct (Mars), and sextile (Venus). The Sun, Mercury, the Lunar Perigee and the Lot of Fortune are present. Focus on your abundance and your wealth, but recognize that ‘traditional’ ways of making money — saving it and investing it — take a long time to work, and there are few other options right now: you can spend it for what you want right now or you can delay your gratification, but not both.

The Third House of extended family and intimate friends is Leo, ruled by the inconjunct Sun. The other two Fire triplicity rulers are present (Jupiter) or trine (Saturn). Leadership roles present themselves in your local communities, particularly those among co-religionists and performers. Your family, both blood and chosen, looks to you for guidance: be sure you’re giving the right advice.

The Fourth House of home, household, and parents is Virgo, ruled by sextile Mercury. The Earth triplicity rulers are present (Venus, who is exiled), while the Moon and Mars are square. The South Node is present. Detailed creativity and gardening bring both contentment and trouble. Visit with the trees on your property or in your neighborhood and talk with them, particularly those that might be at risk of falling on the house. Make small occasions to demonstrate love or affection to your housemates.

The Fifth House of pleasures and pastimes is Libra, ruled by inconjunct Venus. The Air triplicity rulers are opposed (Saturn), square (Mercury) and sextile (Jupiter). You may be considering big purchases on behalf of children or other important family members, but that deserves a re-think; so do any big-ticket items that are related to your hobbies or pastimes. Friends don’t show up as planned, or can’t stay as long as desired.

The Sixth House of daily routines, pets, and injuries is Scorpio, ruled by inconjunct Mars. The other Water triplicity rulers are inconjunct (Moon) and sextile but exiled (Venus). Strong emotional tides and challenging secrets affect our relationship with our pets and subordinates and contractors; the risk of getting cut or burned, but the risk of such wounds being serious or becoming infected is higher than usual. Treat them with due seriousness and bandage them properly.

The Seventh House of spouse, peer partners, and rivals is Sagittarius, ruled by trining Jupiter. The other Fire triplicity rulers are inconjunct (Sun) or trine (Saturn). Relationships with others receive a serious boost, but there is a risk of overdoing any one connection. Be wary of stealing the spotlight from your peers and partners; take the time to make sure that the most important people have their desired time in the sunshine. Don’t overdo the same campfire stories, either: make room for new nighttime diversions.

The Eighth House of obligation, duty and legacy is Capricorn, ruled by squaring Saturn. The Earth triplicity rulers are inconjunct (Moon, Mars) or trine but exiled (Venus). The Lunar Apogee is present. Shared resources may be drawn upon for personal use, and personal responsibility can be temporarily set aside, but these conditions are unlikely to last. Stay within reasonable boundaries, keep receipts, and write out your rationales before you enact an impulse purchase with someone else’s money — or volunteer someone else’s time.

The Ninth House of higher learning and long-distance travel is Aquarius ruled by sextile Saturn. The other Air triplicity rulers are opposed (Jupiter) or inconjunct (Mercury). Pluto is present and retrograde. It is easier to plan journeys than to execute them; easier to discover topics to study than to commit to learning them. Critique is easier than creation of new material. Why is travel or real education so expensive?? Religious communities and therapists seem to be worthy of disparagement and fault-finding; no one who is supposed to be providing help is really living up to expectations (alas, this includes astrologers like me).

The Tenth House of career and professional reputation is Pisces, ruled by inconjunct Jupiter. The Water triplicity rulers are opposed (Venus) or square (Mars, Moon). The North Node is present. Professional matters and career objectives eat time and energy in flip-flopping ways. Expect to name the same document “.final.final” at least twice more before it sticks — revision and review is unlikely to go according to plan as you approach an ever-receding deadline (you can try to ignore the deadline and get it done way early… you’re still going to have to make adjustments).

The Eleventh House of friends, associates, and allies is Aries, ruled by sextile Mars. The Fire triplicity rulers are present (Saturn), square (Sun) or trine (Jupiter). Neptune is also present but retrograde. THere’s a lot of passion for friendships, and time spent with acquaintances with whom you’d like to be better acquainted. Expect that parade to get rained out, though, as local conditions put up dividing lines between you and the people you’d like to spend time with. High-level responsibilities may steal people away, too — but if they’re too idle and don’t seem to be doing much, they may not be your kind of people, either.

The Twelfth House of both obstacles and opportunities is Taurus, ruled by trining but exiled Venus. The other Earth triplicity rulers are inconjunct. Fussy detail work and the facts on the ground right now may get in the way of making long-term plans. The difficulty in getting started may also bring on delays. Any long-term plan will definitely have to take into account the logistics of getting the right materials to the right place at the right time. The foundation your future success will rest on is built of actual physical stuff — get the stuff where it needs to be!

Horoscopes by Rising Sign

Decan I of any sign (usually covering the 21st of the month to the first of the following month) is free to all visitors; Decan II is only available to Patreon and Ko-Fi.com subscribers; and Decan III is available to Patreon, Ko-Fi, and MailChimp subscribers.

I recommend reading your Sun sign, Moon sign, and Rising sign for best results. I write them with rising sign in mind, but several people have told me they find that they do better with all three.

Gemini: Watch your footing and take care of your hands this week — quick stumbles and fast knife movements in the kitchen may land you in hot water or set your emotional life on edge. Friends hold boundaries despite your big dreams; a wandering journey proves costly, but financial opportunities arise that bring new wealth your way. Be generous to a sibling or family member. Tend your own garden.

Cancer: Review what you’re carrying in your wallet, and stop before that third drink for best results. Long term plans take a harsh hit that may be emotionally trying, but see the opportunity that arises after crying about the loss. A sibling or family member plants their trouble in your lap. A boss or supervisor throws cold water on a big potential dream, at least for now.

Leo: Local issues give you a growing need — and ability — to step into the spotlight and make a name for yourself on some burning issue. Yet decide how much of this issue you intend to swallow over the long haul before you take the stage, otherwise you might be holding onto this for a year or more. You’ll be surprised, unpleasantly, by how your friends take sides on this. Creative work brings some money, but not as much as you’d hoped.

Virgo: A creative response to household drama is needed in order to complete a slow-moving shift in family dynamics. Contentment is likely to follow. A focus on social time with friends is needed; try a few coffee dates to catch up? Professional issues hit a speed bump and a stop sign — you’ll want to take it personally, but don’t. Can you really repay this debt? Might take a while, but hold your head high.

Libra: Your time is coming, but first you have to make some plans on how to clean up a muddy household situation that’s likely to take some time to resolve. Professional roles require you to shift some work off your desk, so ask supervisors to help you prioritize what you should work on. Leadership opportunities in local communities come your way — but ask for stage time, not just a support role. Money games and power plays put a damper on fun with your romantic partner’s friends.

Scorpio: Success, today, comes in the form of hard work and taking up those challenging items on your to-do list that you just don’t feel like doing. Knock those off, and there’s a lot more you’ll be able to learn and things you’ll be able to do. Getting them done will free up time for some more detailed explorations. Criticizing your housemates’ messses may be more costly than just cleaning up after them.

Sagittarius: No need to rehash most of your challenges; your significant others may do it for you, loudly and aggressively. Someone will throw cold water on your current passions; extended family dramas and local passions bring criticism but also new resources. Some of your responsibilities ease up. You have a choices about which kinds of learning to pursue or journeys of discovery to take. Create a new job for yourself while getting down and dirty at home.

Capricorn: Doing difficult tasks can be fun if you break some of the usual rules and establish some new parameters for how you get paid and why. Limit which friends can visit you at home for now, but start claiming the right to make that space open to your chosen visitors. Keep control of your riskier tools during daily labors. Help a significant other solve money problems. Lend kind advice and expertise to neighbors.

Aquarius: You may have to walk back some of your recent criticisms about travel or education… You’re not exactly wrong, but your timing is off at the very least; this all takes a lot longer to play out than you assumed. Show big-hearted contrition in public to those you care about; do the emotional labor that others expect you to do. Will you have to give up some personal time to help others? Yes, but consider — presence makes prevention of panic possible.

Pisces: It may be hard to see your leadership opportunities at work in the presence of the daily grind, but people are ready to look to you. Remember when taking the spotlight that you have to be loud, and right. Financial hardships may be grinding you down, but that’s nothing compared to the fierceness you show at home: do you really need to hold this anger, or can you let it go? Take time to appreciate the abundance of your hobbies and maybe also the beauty of your children’s discoveries.

Aries: Remember that it’s easy to rain on your friends’ parades right now. You can be a fount of wisdom to many but also the grump wishing they’d get off your lawn. You can pit yourself against close friends or blood relations with ease — but can you shine with your usual love and generosity? Is your joy to be found in being the center of attention, or in teaching others? Creative effort in the details is where you’ll find contentment… and difficulty.

Taurus: You may start this week feeling a burn in your wallet or purse that chills your enthusiasm for both friends and long-term plans — do you have to travel so much for work? Are these recent costs worth all the bother? Before answering, think whether you helped others find magic last week, and if that helped you bring your big-hearted self, home. Get creative with food choices. Both trouble and delight are going to live there, this week.
