Song: Here we come a-shoveling

I wrote a song this morning, based on the traditional tune Here we come a-wassailing, and celebrating our first real snowfall of the season. There have been some flurries here and there, but this has been the first snowstorm. Our plow guy came by this morning for a first pass, and then I cleared off the cars, and moved them, and he came back for a second drive-through.

My wife and I have long observed the tradition that grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup are the official meal of snow-days, and it was no different today than in the past. Although today, I also had some leftover braised chicken I wanted to eat, and I had a larger lunch than usual as a result.

Here we come a-shoveling

“here we come a-shoveling” by Andrew B. Watt to a traditional British tune
Cheese and bread, come to you!
And some hot tomato soup!
And god bless you and send you
Some safety in the snow!
And god send you some safety in the snow….

We’ve cleared away the white stuff
That is piled at our door;
Now we’re in the season
Where we’ll all been before!

Cheese and bread, come to you!
And some hot tomato soup!
And god bless you and send you
Some safety in the snow!
And god send you some safety in the snow….

The shovel has a handle cold;
There’s holes in these old boots;
And the frost is passing hard,
That chills me to the roots…

Cheese and bread, come to you!
And some hot tomato soup!
And god bless you and send you
Some safety in the snow!
And god send you some safety in the snow….

The plough-guy has now driven by,
And made his first big pass—
But now the ice is seen beneath,
As smooth and slick as glass…

Cheese and bread, come to you!
And some hot tomato soup!
And god bless you and send you
Some safety in the snow!
And god send you some safety in the snow….
