A colleague of mine is spending a lot of time these days talking about limited language, and the negative effects that it can have on one’s writing. She’s a stickler for detail, and yet works to pull students hard into developing their descriptive skills.
Accordingly, when I saw today’s XKCD.com I knew she had to have it as a temporary poster. So, I printed it out at 800% normal size, taped the pieces together, used a glue stick to affix a backing to it, and made a poster for her classroom. Very successful, very temporary.
She said, "I’m going to laminate it!" I suggested that for copyright reasons, that wasn’t ideal, but I think it will get immediate use in helping to teach kids to use broader language than just the simplest word they can think of.
