Ancient Design Solutions

I’ve always been a believer in technology — just not always ‘modern technology’.  Here’s two videos about ways in which ancient technology managed the limitations of their available skill-set to achieve remarkable things.

First, centuries-old water systems in the Golden Desert of India:

And second, the Astrolabe:

The thing that amazes me about these technologies is how much they show us that genuine design solves problems that are particular to a place — the Golden Desert in the case of the first one; the planet Earth in the case of the second — but in both cases what begins as a way to solve the environmental challenges, they become expressions of cultural beauty and cultural awareness.

What does your school say about the place where you live?
