The microbiologist and I were talking about teaching after our teaching period together today, and I don’t think I’m breaking any confidences when I repeat her witticism:
I teach for free. I get paid to grade.
And it’s facile, really. It’s silly. But it’s true… the hardest part of a teacher’s job… the most agonizing, the most difficult… is reading through a student paper and deciding what grade to put on it.
