A student was having difficulty yesterday during practice, and I said, “Relax into the actions… you know that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” Usually I’m not so trite, but usually this student responds well to traditional platitudes.
Alas, he’s all grown up.
“Yeah?” he replied. “What about if it paralyzes you? Are you stronger after that? What about if it severs your hamstrings and cuts off an arm?”
Well. There’s not much to say in response to that. I chuckled a little at his irony, and we went back to fencing.
