Deadlines

Starting this term, I’ve instituted a 10:30pm curfew on additions of comments to the reading of the day for our wiki. I got the idea from Bill Sullivan, who did this on his blog as a way of ensuring that students did some homework daily.

The first daily deadline just expired, by my clock. And the evidence is that out of seventeen students, eight did the homework.

We have paper tools at my school for dealing with children who don’t do their homework: Make-Up Study Hall, or MUSH, is available every afternoon, and you get assigned there. It’s not disciplinary action, precisely, but it is a potentially serious consequence at a school with major sports programs. MUSH is great at collecting completed paper assignments and returning them to the assigning teacher. I’ve not really tested yet how this system is going to work with ninth grade students who don’t complete online work. Tomorrow will be the test, I guess.

There are seventeen comments on the online section of the Iliad assigned for homework tonight. I left eight of them, and two more are by the same student.

Given what was assigned, there should be about thirty-five comments there. I guess it’s time to test whether MUSH can survive contact with the digital experience… or if the digital experience can survive enforced commentary…

  1. Also: a motivation to getting them to blog/wiki each night is to let them use that material as resource/reference on the test/exam/project/assessment/etc.

  2. Good move. I’ve long had a midnight deadline for blogging and wiki homework; both obviously check-able via RSS and wiki-history. The kids, by-and-large, respond well.

My RSS reader popped up with your blog post just as I finished checking my online math assessment tool to see who had finished their HW… we have a similar homework catch-up time and it’s no problem (being 1:1) to send them there to get finished up. It’s been a shock for them to see how closely they can be tracked online.
