NOLS Backpacking

After a lengthy delay, much back-and-forthing, and much communication with doctor, admissions officer, medical team and other personnel, I am finally cleared to go to NOLS in July.  July 2-3 or 4, I’ll go down to my parents, and then July 5 I fly out to Wyoming for two weeks in the wilderness, learning backpacking, camping, hiking, navigation, communication and leadership skills for outdoor educators.  I’m happy.  I’m scared.  I’m excited.  I’m terrified.

The course instructors are still worried about my weight, so I celebrated my formal admission by going on a 6-mile hike.  I did some huffing and puffing, but I did all right, and I’m happy that I could do it with 40 lb. on my back.  Gradually I need to work up from 40 to 60, so that there’s no problem when I get to Wyoming.

Thank you for your generous support.

  1. Congratulations! That’s wonderful. Maybe we can get together for lunch or something before you go. Now that my school year is over I can sort get back to having a life!
