General Strike

Apparently there have been calls in the immigrant community for a general strike on May 1. Anyone know about this? Anyone planning on (not) participating?

    Funny you should ask…

Actually, it is 12 shots of their espresso over ice, a favorite beverage when excessive displays of physical labor are required, such as today. You have reminded me that I am due a visit to the Great Goddess Caffeina!

    Doh.

Thanks for filling in a rather serious gap in my knowledge.
I’ve been celebrating May Day in a much older context.

Is that a Starbucks’Iced Americano that you are holding in your icon?

How is May Day a communist holiday? Um, because it is? May Day has been celebrated by labor unions, socialists, and other communists for most of this past century. Before there was a Labor Day in the US, May Day was it. It is celebrated as a worker’s holiday in many marxist parts of the world.

After reading that link, I feel sick to my stomach…..everyone is entitled to their opinion, I guess…. However……since when is May Day a “Marxist holiday”?…..I’d like to see how they figgered that.

  5. General Strike Info?

Google brings up this as the most common link: http://www.nohr4437.org/

Apparently, the conservative movement is trying to turn it into Conservative Shopping Day! in an effort to counteract the “illegal strike by illegal immigrants.” As a Human Events conservative blog points out, there will be shorter lines in all the stores, all the clerks will speak English, and that “all the illegal immigrants are willing to skip working days that no real American is willing to skip.” (http://www.humaneventsonline.com/blog-detail.php?id=14045)

The Boycott is expected to be huge in the South and Southwest. Apparently the State Senate of California has endorsed the strike, so things may be interesting tomorrow.

  6. it is going to be huge.

it is a general protest in support of immigrant rights. the idea is to show what impact immigrants have in this country. they are expecting cities like LA & Chicago to be almost at a standstill. (I’m flying through chicago on monday. could be interesting) this is more than just a border issue. the call is for ALL immigrants (current & descendants of) to join the strikes. there are marches planned & Chicago is predicting 300,000+ on monday. they are also asking people not to shop on monday to show their support for immigrant rights.

i tell you, if i were not flying on monday i would take the day off in support. almost all of us are of immigrant stock. why was it ok for our ancestors to come here but it is not ok for the new immigrants? i’m hoping that monday will be huge & people will see just how large the immigrant voice is in america.
