Journal Lust

OK. I’m willing to admit that I have a blank-book addiction. It’s been a problem in the past, and it’s been under control for a while now. It’s under control at least in part because I don’t buy my own books any more. I ask other people for them.

So… can I ask for this?

The DaVinci Codex

It holds four hundred sheets. FOUR HUNDRED SHEETS. And it looks damn cool.

I want.

I won’t buy for myself, and , you are not to do this for my birthday or Christmas or nothin’.

Just sayin’.

Actually, if the universe can decide that it’s time for me to have a pen, the universe can decide when it’s time for me to have the book. 🙂

Update: reminded me that I have to be really specific about what I ask for. So, I’d like for this book to use brown leather, with sapphire blue cabochons, and be inscribed with the text, “Compendium of the Art.” Yes, it’s pompous. So’s the book. Deal.

  1. There’s a story in the book, Tales from a Magic Monastery by Theophane the Monk, that a novice applying to be a monk in the monastery is given a plain notebook, a pencil and an eraser. Each day, he is supposed to record something he’s done that’s beautiful, noble and true. When the notebook is full, he is admitted. But, the would-be novice admits, “I used the eraser more than I used the pencil. And eventually I used up the pencil, and I lost the notebook, and… well, I still do the beautiful, the noble and the true thing… but I can’t reflect on it too much, or I question my own motives.”

Gotta fill the journals so there’s something worthy of putting in a $399.00 book…. 🙂

  2. Hi, my name is Will, and I… I’m a blank book addict.

    Drooool.

(then I stare at the ‘pustulent pig skin’ journal, the ‘green tile’ journal, among others, and think… ok, gotta fill those first)

  4. That’s the beauty of it. It’s not meant to be written into. It’s a book where the pages can be removed from the bindings, written (or printed!) on, and then re-inserted into the book. The thing could hold EVERY SINGLE POEM I’VE WRITTEN, the epic included, and still have space left over for stuff I want to write.

With the cost of color copying and printing dropping, you could even print each page as an ‘illuminated manuscript’, much as I was showing you with the Moon Sonnets. Different parts of the book could conform to different font styles and formats, but you could set some overall guidelines about how each page or each section of the book was to be managed.

Four Hundred Pages. ‘Scuse me while I ponder this wonder.

Oakthorne’s comment is dead-on. This is a book for a coven, or a magical working group. This has the potential to be an extraordinary thing of power for several generations.

  5. That, my friend, will be the beginning of a coven Book of Shadows one day, mark my words.

I’m thinking, all the sonnets and odes and pagan hymns I’ve written… the Arthurian epic, and if I’m ever initiated and that sort of stuff… hell, yes. With the price of color printing coming down, you could combine this book with a printer that handles 11×17 pages, and whoomp…. you got yourself a coven with an illuminated Book of Shadows, mang. And you can make the type large enough for anyone to read… 🙂

  6. Damn.

So… if you want the universe to supply you with one of these, you’ll have to be specific… what color leather, what color accents, etc… what goes on the nameplate…

You realize that this is not going to be the sort of book you can keep in your pocket for occasional writings. More like the sort of thing you’d write your next epic into.

  8. O_O

    Jesus Christ.

I have decided that I want one of those. My gods. Not the precise one you linked to, mind – I want the Witch’s Grand Tome. 11×17 pages? Sign me up.

That, my friend, will be the beginning of a coven Book of Shadows one day, mark my words. With the opening pages reserved for a listing of initiations, elevations and their dates, the forward pages meant to hold the passages of the traditional Alexandrian Book of Shadows, and the pages thereafter for our own additions?

Yes, please. Hell, once I get my Third Degree, I may bloody well get that for myself as a gift.

    Joe
