My dad just called me to ask if I wanted to go with him and Mom to Leptis Magna in March.
Leptis Magna is one of the finest and most beautiful colonial cities built by the Romans in its far-flung empire. For twenty years I’ve known that I would never see it, because it was in Lybia. Then Kaddafi got his act together, and Lybia joined the rest of the world, and the US decided to forgive some of Lybia’s former actions in order to help it adjust to life in the modern world. I began to have hope.
The trip mom and dad are taking is one dream come true… and I’m already scheduled to lead a group of 8th and 9th graders to Washington, DC.
I can’t go.
Does anyone know what/which PDAs are compatible with iCal, the Macintosh program for creating events? I’m learning a dozen different ways to make use of it, and it’s getting exciting. I’d love to be able to carry this calendar with me all the time when I travel, because I’m using it to track plants and animals and trees I’m trying to learn; photos that I’ve taken (who what and where); good and bad things that different students do; and the plans I’m making for classes. I’d like to be able to synch my iCal with something to fit in my breast pocket.

Move the DC trip up or down a week or two – DC will still be there, all the monuments and museums and traffic jams and politicians will still be there, and they will all still be doing the same stupid things, so it doesn’t matter if you go in February, March or April – and it’s far enough in advance that the reservations, etc. can be moved with nary a problem.
Promise the school you will bring back plentiful photos and stuph, and give a presentation on your experiences, or put them up on a website, or something (if you can’t take good photos, learn. You’ve got six months or so… :-). This is a once-in-a-lifetime kinda thing, and you should not miss out, full stop.

Can’t your parents or the school shift the dates a little? I mean, you could argue that its researh for your history classes….no wait, I’ve got it! Take the kids to Leptis Magna! They can always go to DC on their own.
