… and not happy about it. I got sucked into a conversation about religion and the reformability of the Roman Catholic Church until 1 in the morning. No way should I be up. Alas.
Graduation went well yesterday. GA won the “O P C M a D” award, but several people have quietly let me know that I came close to winning. So very close. Some people seemed to think I should be upset about the fact that I missed the award by one vote — that if only one other kid had voted for me, I would have been the winner.
I saw the award. It’s a clear lucite block. So very abstract. Genteel.
Meanwhile, the mother of one of my students gave me a Kunichika woodblock print. It was made about 1870, and it’s an early impression; the grain of the woodblock is visible in the background of the print. It makes use of natural dyes: the purples and reds are especially elegant.
Who says I didn’t win?
135 year old woodblock print vs hunk of platic? Oh, yeah–you the man!

You’re a Winner in My Book!
Andrew,
I think you’re the bee’s knees. That’s the one award that matters, and I’m 100% certain that it will go your way sometime in the not-so-distant future. Even if it doesn’t, know that the kids and your colleagues appreciate everything you do.
I’m going to the Apple Store now! Yee hah!
Love,
Your Colleague
