Flight
For SPEAK…, the poetry reading in Uxbridge, MA
Forgotten Daedalus reached Sicily
with feathered wings of wax and string intact
to learn his son was already legend.
Why should this firey failure amaze?
wondered the old refugee from Knossos,
baiting the conch with honey for the ant
with a long black thread tied to its thorax.
I built both pairs of wings and made the flight,
escaped bronze Talos, my own creation —
my son, the stupid brat, just fell and died,
mistaking freedom for flight of fancy.
As the ant ate honey, threading the conch,
the old man devised a new invention
to bring the tyrant Minos to his doom.
I wish… I’m up against a deadline this week for White Wolf — three hundred pages to read, five thousand words to write and I’m running out of time.
I wanted you to know that I’m thinking about you all, though, and wishing I were there.
Much love and affection….
I assume you’re bringing this?
