So, having vowed to begin work on Orien again, and having been invited to join an online writers’ workshop-style community, I thought, well, this ought to be cool… and started writing again, but directly to LiveJournal.
Mistake.
When I posted, I discovered that the community was in read-only mode at the time, as a result of database maintenance.
I lost about eighty lines of poetry. I was mad.
A reminder to save your work.
Save your work.
Did you hear me? Save your work!
Saving your work
If using a wp isn’t really what you want, you could use an LJ authoring tool such as Semagic (what I use for long stuff) which allows you to compose with LJ-compatible formatting, has shortcuts for lots of useful things, and, above all, facilitates saving! It’s also somewhat more robust than most web browsers 🙂

When I used my back-button…
When I used my back-button, I got another copy of the same message, “this journal is in read-only mode.” I got locked out of the update page entirely.
I always use a writing program (like MSWord) when writing something of importance to post to LJ. I’ve lost too many things that way as well. Might be something for you to try.

& then you go back & there’s no text there? yes, i found that the other part of lj that occasionally eats text is while in reply mode, if your reply is over a certain number of characters (4500? 45000? i don’t remember specifically) – i’ve started selecting all & copying before i hit the update button anymore.
grr. sorry to hear about that.
