Sagittarius II 2025: The Harness

Austin Coppock named the second decan of Sagittarius The Bridle, associating it with the challenges of making sure that one has the right mixture of humane labor and animal play in one’s life (I tend to call it The Harness). It’s represented in the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck by the 9 of Wands, showing a man with a bandaged head leaning on his staff, a collection of eight other staves set up behind him as trophies: we achieve victory, but at some cost to ourselves. It begins this year on Monday 1 December 2025, at 5:45 pm EST, and lasts nine days, twenty hours, and 29 minutes, concluding on 11 December 2025. T. Susan Chang called this decan Tensile Strength, representing the way that materials can hold their shape even while being stretched to the breaking point — and how we, too, can only be pulled so many ways before we snap.

The ancient Greeks associated this season with the goddess Kore, whose name simply means “the maiden” or “the young girl.” We know her most often today as Persephone, goddess-queen of the Underworld and bride of Hades — but we must ask the question: is this is the girl who goes willingly to the underworld in order to claim her power? Or is this the girl unwillingly claimed at a time not of her choosing? Ancient sources do not say, and so we are left to speculate.

Our oldest and most widely known stories about Persephone describe her as the daughter of Demeter. She was out playing in the fields in her role as goddess of flowers and of the spring quickening, when Hades spied her, and kidnapped her in an instant. After a long drama in which Demeter refused to let anything grow, Hades released her — but, having consumed fruit from the gardens of the underworld, Persephone was condemned to spend six months of every year in the realms below. It’s a story of sexual trauma, abduction and hostage-taking and death-grief, right?

And it’s the public story.

One of the few things we know about the Eleusinian Mysteries — which were perhaps centuries old in the Mycenaean era, around 1600 BCE — is that they centered around the story of Demeter, Persephone, and Hades… a different story. A story radically different than one rooted in an abduction, a rape, and an arranged marriage. To tell this story outside of the proper confines of the ceremonies held at Eleusis once a year, was punishable by death. The playwright Aeschylus is the only person known to have been put on trial for asebeia, or impiety with regard to the Mysteries, for putting scenes in one of his plays that were related to the hidden myth; he was acquitted, but we don’t know which play of his led to him being accused, and more than fifty of his plays don’t survive even in fragments.

It’s perhaps wise to imagine how that other story went, this time of year: not just the horrific abduction; not the death of a young girl in the prime of life; not the grieving mother. There are other possibilities, and we have observed them in our own children and those of our friends and family — the young woman who gave up on food and was brought back to “living” by a friend and ally; the enthusiastic child who fell head over heels in love for an unattainable pop-star; the child who expresses deep devotion to the divine as a way of avoiding confronting their own blooming but alternative sexuality; the woman who escapes a domineering parent through marriage… The genuine mystery here is that it can be thought of and expressed in manifold and complex expressions. Children, as they grow up, begin to have thoughts and opinions and desires quite different than their parents want — and maybe those expressions are as holy and sacred and as deserving of honor and respect as their adult guardians’ expectations.

The second decan of Sagittarius is administered by the Moon, who would be in the twenty-first and twenty-second Mansions while here.

The four dodeks or twelfth-parts of Sagittarius II are assigned to Aries, Taurus, Gemini and Cancer — representing the ways in which the original fire of physical love and erotic desire are both tempered and shaped by other needs — the physical comforts of food and shelter, the intellectual needs of education and personal development, and finally the emotional security of a mature relationship in which the body’s animal desires are actuated and supported by emotional and intellectual partnership.

Dates to Watch

The Full Moon at 13° Gemini occurs on December 4. The Full Moon in Gemini occurring before the Winter Solstice was anciently associated with the coming of age of warriors; and with festivities and rites in honor of Artemis Selene, the goddess of the Moon.

The Jupiter-Saturn trine continues December 1-4. It’s a good time for working out the practical aspects of a problem or issue, rather than the grand philosophical underpinnings of your big ideas. Focus on delivering product or service, rather than exploring your “why” in these days. Observe, and do your best to restrain, the habits that make you behave like someone else’s father or mother —honor the work of your colleagues, but don’t patronize them.

Mars squares Saturn on December 7 through December 9. Now it’s time for you to avoid being patronized. Recognize that you need mentors, but don’t let them steal your work this week. At the same time, recognize that the desire to be free and the desire to know who to be led by, are often in conflict during this transit.

Neptune’s retrograde ends on December 10-11. A long period of looking back at prior visions and dreams is coming to an end, and it will soon be time to focus your eyes on what is to come. What memories are fueling your hopes for the future?

Mercury opposes Uranus on December 10. Usual routines arouse impatience, and your mind is likely to be working faster than your mouth. Take a deep breath before committing to projects that are larger than your abilities, even if your emotional train wreck of a crush flitters their eyes at you and says, “pretty please?”

House Delineations

The First House of self and self-presentation is Cancer, ruled by the squaring Moon, and hosting Jupiter retrograde. The Triplicity rulers are either inconjunct (Venus, Mars) or square (Moon). Jesus recommended that you not hide your light under a bushel basket, but set it on a lamp stand to light up the whole house. On the other hand, reflecting your employer’s desires back to them clearly and without distortion, is likely to win you more recognition and honor. Help to bring about what they desire — or resign if their yearnings are aimed at too odious or venal a goal.

The Second House of money and possessions is Leo, ruled by the trining Sun in Sagittarius in the sixth house. The triplicity rulers of fire signs are inconjunct (Jupiter, Saturn) or trine (Sun). Your money and resources are likely secure against theft or fraud at the moment, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have costly obligations to house and home, or make expensive choices and mistakes. Remember that holidays are often a season for giving to others; be sure you’re not spending too broadly on your own pleasures.

The Third House of extended family and intimate friends is Virgo, ruled by sextile Mercury retrograde in Scorpio in the fifth house. The triplicity rulers of earth signs are either inconjunct (Moon) or square (Venus, Mars). The South Node and the Imum Coeli are both present. Your inner circle of friends and close family seem to be a giant sucking black hole of needs and urgency… and at the same time are an ever-flowing wellspring of deep contentment and hope and ease. But you won’t know which encounter is which until it’s over — and often they’ll be both. Meet need with responsibility; relax into grace… this state of turbulence won’t last forever.

The Fourth House of home, household, and parents is Libra, ruled by sextile Venus in Sagittarius in the sixth house. Keeping home on a level keel may require turning the heat up, and zipping the mouth shut. It’s no guarantee of peace under your roof, because rule-breaking and provocations will be constant and hard to ignore. Recognize that you bring a peace-maker’s powers to the kitchen table… but also some knife-sharp wits. Surgery or slaughter, it’s up to you to make the home you want.

The Fifth House of pleasures and pastimes is Scorpio, ruled by inconjunct Mars in Sagittarius in the sixth house. The triplicity rulers of water signs are all inconjunct (Mars, Venus, Moon). Sex, drugs, and rock’n’roll are all on the table as the delights and entertainments of the incoming holiday season — but so are daily opportunities for mismanagement of bad habits, overuse, abuse, and rough consequences. Mercury retrograde promises the revelation of secrets you were hoping to hide — better you come clean than be found out.

The Sixth House of daily routines, pets, and injuries is Sagittarius, ruled by inconjunct Jupiter in Cancer in the first house. Triplicity rulers are either square (Saturn), inconjunct (Jupiter) or present (Sun). Venus and Mars are both present, as is the Lunar Apogee. The labors of the coming days require a mix of intelligence, creativity and raw force to complete; bending rules and norms will be necessary — but remember that the Stoics taught everything in moderation, including moderation. Allow extra travel time for your commuting.

The Seventh House of spouse, peer partners, and rivals is Capricorn, ruled by sextile Saturn in Pisces in the ninth house. Triplicity rulers are either square (Moon) or inconjunct (Venus, Mars). There’s a theory that you can ‘bank’ trust and romance with your partner by making regular ‘deposits’ of emotional maturity: doing extra cleaning, demonstrating attentiveness to shared chores, handing overhanging tasks, fixing small problems in shared space, or solving problems without increasing their cognitive load. This would be a good week to do that for your partner; it might not lead to immediate gratification, but it will prep you for the coming stressors of the end of 2025 and the start of 2026.

The Eighth House of obligation, duty and legacy is Aquarius, ruled by inconjunct Saturn in Pisces in the ninth house. The triplicity rulers of air signs are inconjunct (Jupiter, Saturn) or square (Mercury). Pluto is present. It will be difficult in the next ten days to identify whether your responsibilities are best managed from home, or by being on the road far from home; at school or the workshop, or from your own couch. One way or another, you’ll need to take economic risks whose results are difficult to predict, and whose outcomes are unclear. Make the best decisions you can with the information you have, but know some of them won’t have desirable outcomes.

The Ninth House of higher learning and long-distance travel is Pisces, ruled by trining and exalted Jupiter retrograde. The triplicity rulers of water signs are inconjunct (Moon) or square (Venus, Mars). Saturn, Neptune, and the North Node are present along with the Midheaven. Travel and religious themes dominate the next ten days, whether you’re praying for good results on final exams, or making holiday travel plans. Questions of “what do we do about the old people?” may dominate these dialogues as you and they wind toward inevitable conclusions. Remember to hold up a vision of the next two decades or so, even as you wrestle with the difficulties of the next couple of years.

The Tenth House of career and professional reputation is Aries, ruled by trining Mars in Sagittarius. The Moon is present. The triplicity rulers of fire signs are either trine (Sun), square (Jupiter) or inconjunct (Saturn). Emotional maturity is required as you lay out your desires and express your longings for the future: both what you want as a day-to-day matter, and how you intend to work on your career and professional goals over the long haul. You need to be thinking about what skills you need to acquire; rather than holding back from identifying these future competencies, it would be good to explore and make some mistakes now, and then make a New Year’s commitment.

The Eleventh House of friends, associates, and allies is Taurus, ruled by inconjunct Venus in Sagittarius in the sixth house. Uranus is present. The triplicity rulers of earth signs are all inconjunct (Moon, Venus, Mars). Freindships and alliances are likely to revolve around luxurious foods and parties, but don’t expect intimacies or connection to go deeper than “right here, right now.” It’s not a time for deal-making or heavy expectations of mutual aid — show up with a great dish to the potluck, but don’t try to pull anyone out of a financial or medical emergency with only your own resources, no matter how dire it seems.

The Twelfth House of both obstacles and opportunities is Gemini, ruled by inconjunct Mercury retrograde in the fifth house. The triplicity rulers of air signs are square (Saturn) or inconjunct (Jupiter, Mercury). The Lunar Perigee is present. In chess, the goal is to checkmate the king, and the easiest way to do that is to control the center of the board for the early and middle parts of the game — be careful of letting your plans and intentions be sidelined or of being too far out from the center of your professional, romantic, and personal commitments. You may justify your need to return to places of fun and delight quite easily, but there are likely to be challenges by being too far from home or the office. If you find yourself arguing in favor of a business trip to the opposite coast, or an early-winter vacation to someplace sunny and warm… check in with yourself: is that the right call, right now?

Horoscopes by Rising Sign

Decan I of any sign (usually covering the 21st of the month to the first of the following month) is free to all visitors; Decan II is only available to Patreon and Ko-Fi.com subscribers; and Decan III is available to Patreon, Ko-Fi, and MailChimp subscribers.

I recommend reading your Sun sign, Moon sign, and Rising sign for best results. I write them with rising sign in mind, but several people have told me they find that they do better with all three.

Cancer: It’s a good time to do good for your people in the world without necessarily calling attention to the fact that you’re doing good things for them. Professional matters require showing up every day with a mix of cheerful dedication to the work, and an obligation not to run yourself ragged. Romance and connection to others may have to happen long distance. Your home and family life is likely going to run on a daily schedule that needs regular updating, but try not to get lost in the details.

Leo: Bring your focus to the question of how your finances impinge on your hobbies or entertainments; and how your routine expenditures on delights or your kids are impacting your well-being and personal capacities. You may be experiencing some tumult with professional colleagues in the workplace, as historical patterns are revised to take advantage of new and emerging trends. It’s difficult in this new landscape to figure out what your to-do list is going to look like in ten months, or how to clear the decks of old projects that have lingered for a while… or how you’ll get paid for this labor in the future. You’ll figure it out, but plan to pinch pennies into July 2026.

Virgo: Close family matters and extended networks of friends seem to be a source of both difficulty and contentment right now, but sharing out of family heirlooms and history seems to be an important pastime. Are there historic recipes you’re caretaking? If so, it might be time to publish the recipe book you’ve dreamed about. Are there relations you frayed at the Thanksgiving table? A thank you note with a brief apology may be needed. Are you endeavoring to hold a spouse or significant other back from a dream trip or fantasy class or retreat? It may be time to let them go, even if it promises making some sort-term difficulties at home.

Libra: Some family drama may have spilled out by your actions over the course of Thanksgiving and subsequent feast-days. It may not be your responsibility to solve these miniature comedies of errors, but your health and well-being may depend on solving a few financial worries for one of your kids or nephews or nieces. Talk to your spouse about what you’re hoping to do, and make sure they’re willing to be on board with your generosity… but even if they aren’t, make the gifts you intend smaller but not absent.

Scorpio: Personal delights may need to be justified and explained ad nauseam to people who don’t really understand what you’re doing or where you’re coming from. You may experience daily challenges to your financial systems; this may require both creative solutions on the fly, as well as relentless planning and some breaking of rules. You shouldn’t be entirely committed to “all work and no play” but there’s more deliberateness here than frivolity. By all means, though, plan for future delights — after your friends’ lives settle down from their current challenges and difficulties. Your spouse or significant other may have the most troubled days of all. Be a sympathetic load-lifter, and ease their troubles.

Sagittarius: Creative endeavors will require daily striving and exertion, which you may feel the impetus to overdo rather than to simply do. Adding your emotional labor to any project may bring on more suffering than is strictly necessary, but take care of your people wherever you can. A spouse or significant other may get you into some economic encumbrances, even when it’s “just the usual thing.” Take care that your own daily routines solve problems rather than create more. Home exerts a siren song call on you, but family trials may call you to the open road; no one can solve problems like you can, right now. Work on your long-range plans.

Capricorn: Partnership and alliance to others will be critical these coming days; you may want to focus your attention on immediate family members and your inner circle first, and then widen out from there. However, it’s no good to enlist others in alliance if you don’t know what you’re aiming at — devoting some time to identifying targets and determining objectives and goals and activities would be valuable. You can call it a business plan or a strategic planning document, but your daily activities will be better oriented if you have a three-year plan by the end of this first week.

Aquarius: Everything your spouse or significant other or employer needs, is more expensive this year than last. You may be doing fine at living within your means, but no one you work with or work for is doing well under the current spending plan. Helping your allies, partners, and employers learn to navigate this should be an important daily ambition for the next two weeks. However, it should be clear that your austerities should not be acceptable as the long-term norm. Just because you know how to live in a state of poverty, doesn’t mean you should. Use the downtime to figure how to help others, but also to help yourself.

Pisces: Travel plans may go awry just as you need to travel; you may find that there are important and valuable certifications that you should be seeking, but that the window for acquiring them is closing soon unless you act immediately. Even so — breathe. Take a moment to confirm that the emotional stressors aren’t forcing you to leap before you look; and that the turbulence and distress of your advisors aren’t rousing you to unnecessary action. You may not have the time to smell the roses — but it’s also never the right time to lick the flagpole. Don’t get stuck serving someone else’s allegedly important agenda.

Aries: Professional matters are heightened, as it becomes clear that your general purpose learning and certifications can lead the company or community toward what it thinks it desires. You may think that this is a great opportunity to leverage into economic advantage for you and friends — but it might be valuable to to be selfless and figure out a way to include the necessary team, so you don’t wind up doing all the work for everyone. Identify conferences in 2026 and networking opportunities for the right colleagues, and you may win yourself ongoing loyalties from people you’ll need to achieve new heights of leadership and wealth. Don’t think just about yourself, but about your team, and you’ll go farther.

Taurus: You’re drawn to a kind of hermit’s asceticism, where you have a range of responsibilities and challenging tasks, but there is no one available to help you with them. Whether it’s the grape-picking of Tantalus or the stone-rolling of Sisyphus, you’re on board with doing the big jobs that no one else seems to want… and you’re all too aware that no one is going to help if you don’t ask them, specifically and deliberately. But — recognize that this is toxic, and that the correct solution is to organize a new team to help you, and learn to delegate responsibilities to the team. This idea of being the leader in charge of a team is… probably not going to be fun for you. But you are the person who gets to lead, even if you have to break a few rules or norms to do what has to be done. Take charge.

Gemini: Doing the usual in the next ten days is likely to bring on trouble and discontent alike, as valueless secrets pile up and necessary dramas fail to unfold. Your financial well-being is tied in with your personal identity in ways that are difficult to articulate, but probably arise as being too much of a rule-follower in a time that benefits from deconstructed norms. Figure out how to disrupt your usual routines: take a different route to work, drink coffee from a different shop, keep records of what’s working and what isn’t. Professional limitations will continue to chafe, and home may feel unpleasantly restrictive — but it may be a good time to learn about third spaces, and start accessing some of them.
