I mention that I’m interested in learning how to fight counterinsurgencies, and the New York Times very helpfully publishes an article the very next day about the Army’s new field manual for counterinsurgency operations. Googling its title, I discovered that it is available through the Federation of American Scientists website, even though the Army has blocked civilian access to it through regular military websites. It’s simply amazing. I ask the universe, and the universe provides.

There is actual, serious snow on the ground here. I haven’t gone out to the road yet, but the dorm parking lot looks fearsome. There’s an inch or two of snow on the porch, and it is still snowing. I would say more, but I’m a little worried about asking for the wrong things right now.

On the other hand, it’s kinda cool that I can download the manual for the current anti-insurgency operations in a country halfway around the world where we’re fighting right now

Also, the FAS is not the original publisher online. that honor belongs to InsideDefense, which I gather is some sort of publications group that keeps people and policy-makers (not necessarily the same group) up to date on happenings in the world of the Pentagon and various related agencies.

And why.
The FAS may be well-meaning folk, but by putting this up publically during a time its live doctrine, they are certainly endangering the lives of troops on the ground. Welcome to the world of complicated moral judgement.
