Back from DC…

and I feel like someone used me to clean up the spilled motor oil on the floor. I’ve been driving, from DC to home, for 80% of daylight hours today. We hit two major snarls of traffic on the way home. I stink of something awful, I’ve eaten VERY badly for most of the week, and had virtually no sleep. Half of my students are sick of each other, the other half are best buddies, and the sight of any of them right now would make me ill.

A perfect trip, in other words.

I still don’t have my red-lines back from White Wolf. I want a shower, a shave and sleep, not necessarily in that order. I was supposed to finish editing the presentation for tomorrow morning on our DC trip, but it will have to wait until tomorrow.

Right now, I’m strawberry jam on burnt toast. My arms ache something fierce from controlling the steering wheel in heavy traffic, and my legs ache from walking 10+ miles around Arlington Cemetery, the National Mall, and northwest DC all week. Plus, there’s the sleep issue — I don’t sleep very well in cramped rooms with roommates, nice though they may be. I woke up before 5am most days, and once even got up at 6am to go stand in line for visitors’ passes to the Capitol, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and the new National Museum of the American Indian. It is a testimony to how crowded DC is these days that I was only successful in this quest at the last of these three museums. Washington DC is overrun by children, I tell you. And their chaperones. AP, who like me used to live in DC, commented that he had never realized in four years of living there, just how fundamentally busy the city is with tour groups, all the time.

More later, after I’ve had a chance to soak my body under the shower head for a good long while, and sleep.

  1. Thanks for the welcome…

Hi, Vilhem. Thanks. I meant to introduce myself earlier… I was reading the friends pages of friends, and I think I was surfing Yust the Faery King’s page, and was intrigued by what you had to say about Islam. On a whim, I signed up to read your journal irregularly. I hope you don’t mind. I don’t think we’ve ever met, but I’m delighted to begin to make your acquaintance.
